Chicken Neighborhood Watch Bug Vexed Skyrim Devs

Radiant Story and Radiant AI are going to make Skyrim an interesting place in The Elder Scrolls V.

The technology allows the game to adapt to you and gives characters realistic reactions by allowing them to gather information and act accordingly. We’ve heard about characters returning to you items they’ve seen you drop, for example, or coming after you for revenge if you murder a family member, and Skyrim will automatically craft quests to you, the player, based on how you play the game.

People in Skyrim are always watching you. Apparently, so are the chickens.

Bethesda Executive Producer Todd Howard told PC Gamer about one of the Radiant Story bugs his team has had to deal with: crime-reporting chickens. For a while in testing, the developers would commit crimes in Skyrim and then get caught, even though they were committing them out of the sight of other characters. It took a long time to determine what was going wrong: the crimes were being witnessed by chickens, whom Radiant was treating just like other characters.

And those chickens, like all chickens in all video games, were out for justice.

I’m sure this is going to lead to some of the best mods anyone has ever heard of.
