Are Chris Taylor & Wargaming Working On Total Annihilation 2?

Chris Taylor and Bret “The Hitman” Hart have little in common. One is/was a pro wrestler, and one makes real-time strategy video games. But they do share one common bond: When it comes to their professions, they are The Best. They are The Best There Ever Was, and they are The Best There Ever Will Be.

Oh, they’re both Canadian, so that’s two common bonds, I suppose.

Seriously though, Chris Taylor has long been synonymous with the term “RTS,” thanks to his Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander franchises (and hey, Dungeon Siege was pretty rad, too, even if those games are RPGs). It’s been a bumpy road, from Cavedog to Gas Powered Games to failed Kickstarters, but GPG’s light at the end of the tunnel came a few months ago, when Chris and his brand cozied up with

What’s Chris been working on over at Wargaming, anyway? Is he pursuing his Wildman dreams? Is it the fabled MMO we reported on in April?

…or is he working on Total Annihilation 2?

In a recent podcast (an RTS-focused German show by the name of CNC-Inside), Chris and CNC-I waxed poetic about a number of different topics: Taylor’s dream game, working on games in the early 90′s, and so on. Towards the end of the interview (roughly the one hour, six minute mark), CNC-I gently poses the TA2 question. Taylor’s response is interesting, to say the least.

“I can’t, I won’t, I shouldn’t, it’s just not an area that I’m ready to talk about yet…you are welcome to use your imagination, [and] your imagination will serve you well, I think, in this case.”

It’s not a direct confirmation that Total Annihilation exists, but Wargaming does own the rights to Total Annihilation, so there’s a very good chance that TA2 is in the works. But should it see the light of day? With Planetary Annihilation already in beta, do we need TA2? Or is this going to be another odd split in the same vein of Vivendi, Monolith, and the F.E.A.R. saga? Or, even stranger: Is the new MMO we reported on a Total Annihilation free-to-play MMO?

Yes, we NEED freaking Total Annihilation II. The real-time RTS hasn’t just stagnated but in many ways regressed over the past decade. Sure, the graphics have improved but what does that matter if a game is fundamentally half-baked and lacking features that were common in the late 90′s? Planetary Annihilation is, sadly, shaping up to be far less appealing the more we learn. The whole “micro-planet” thing is just silly. The fact they seem to only be planning to have a single faction at launch is also a deal-breaker for most of us. Taylor could, if he summons his true old-school developer mojo, give us the TA 2 we need *and* deserve. However, he’s got to be straight with us this time. Supreme Commander was supposed to be moddable out of the box, tools were to be made available to the community, but we all know what happened. Maps that were effectively 2D, ten years after TA made use of pseudo-3D height mapping. Chris needs to take a good look at things like Spring for a dash of inspiration. What I think most TA fans really want is something with the 3D option but capable of being played solely from a top-down perspective. Deformable terrain, variable movement on different surfaces, adjacency bonuses, tactical units with special features, etc – and an AI that understands how to use all of these factors to its advantage. Gimmicks are NOT what any true RTS lover is looking for. Being able to jump into a unit first-person (and maybe even control it) is a good example..sure, it would be great, but its hardly necessary. Oh, and its gotta have factions that are at least reminiscent of the Arm and Core, just as Supreme Commander did. Ideally the game would ship with at least three playable sides. Perhaps a third race could be something like the TA mod The Lost Legacy (TLL), a hybrid of the Arm and Core, or something completely different. TA’s backstory had the Core recovering alien technology at one point. Maybe those aliens aren’t as extinct as we thought. The story was never a vital component for was really just a vehicle for the single-player campaigns (which hopefully TA2 would have). It did introduce some very iconic ideas to gaming, however, like clones vs machines spawning endless war. All in all I think a Total Annihilation 2 would be one of the most exiting developments for PC gaming since..well, for a long damn time. Its one of the oldest games that still has an active fan community, with the great being their primary watering hole. With C&C kind of fading away the RTS has become a niche genre largely displaced by casual tower defense games and the like. If anyone could bring back the magic of old, one would hope Chris Taylor was that guy.

As much as I would like to see another, they totally screwed up Supreme Commander so bad I don’t know if I would trust Chris with it. I still play SC on a semi regular basis. Its still one of my all time favs. but I won’t play two. It just stunk to high heaven. All of Chris’s latest attempts at game making have all ended up in the landfill. Anybody remember or even like any of these : Supreme Commander 2, Space Siege, Dungeon Siege 3? All were his most recent attempts, all sucked. I’m afraid he’s lost his touch. If somehow the old Chris Taylor came through, yeah, but his latest persona, well, I’ll pass.

I really hope they are currently making it. Pyscros in particular nails what i would like from TA2.

It seems he has lost touch most certainly, there is still hope though. Either way it is most assuredly a no pre order if TA2 does get made.

if they just made forged alliance more scalable I would be a happy man. this is the best game ever made, just need to make use of newer hardware

TA2 should be created.. Plain and simple. I still continue to visit the tauniverse website. I still play TA and have been since the 90′s.. i suggest everyone visit the website, by the game from their recommended sources (commander pack). then get the necessary patches to play the MODS. such as escalation, Zero, Total Mayhem.
I havent play Supreme commander.. no need to, seen reviews.. No game has been like TA original and the unlimited downloads it seems.. So to those who bought the rights please read and believe.
Make it like the original- Graphics don’t have to extreme but pay attention to the original and keep it robotic. Keep it mass army like. The original gave you a unit limit of 200.. I play with a patch of 1500, and its more acceptable. Massive defensive forces and offensive forces. Vehicle plants, Aircraft plants, Robot plants, Shipyards, and other races.. Combine all the ideas of TA and Supreme and TA Kingdoms and you got one awesome long time running RTS of true transformer like and full scale take over ideas.
Let Planetary Annihilation rule their empire of concepts and ideas, and you guys maybe bring back another fantasy idea of TA2 and make it real. You bought the rights SO MAKE IT RIGHT! :)
i would love to help aswell maybe contact me somehow no need to leave me out of this concept i mean i put plenty of time into it and money so why not continue with a idea and make it real
