Chrono Trigger Hits iPhone, iPad — Hooray!

Square Enix slipped another big-time port onto Apple’s iOS mobile platform today, adding the illustrious Chrono Trigger to its iPhone and iPad lineup.

The port runs at $9.99 — cheap compared to Squeenix’s other stupidly overpriced titles like Final Fantasy III (which usually start their iTunes App Store lives at $16.99). For me, that’s a forgivable price for one of the best games ever made, but it’s still just plain dumb for a game pushing 20 years old being ported into a mobile world where Grand Theft Auto III is going to draw an asking price of $4.99.

That said, it’s still awesome to have Chrono Trigger on a smartphone. It’s worth noting that this is the Nintendo DS port, not the PSX rework with the additional anime scenes. Hit this link to download the game.

$10 isn’t bad considering the cartridge alone can cost around $40 on ebay. And boxed with manual can be over $100. I’d still rather get a rom and play it on android.

I DO believe I hear the cash-cow being milked… Looks like Squeenix is going the way of Sega… Pointlessly repacking the same 20 year old games from the “glory days” and selling them for 10 – 40 bucks a pop.

Hell

At least Sega had the courtesy to give you between 10 and 80 games for your 30 bucks.

Does anyone know if there’s a specific iPAD version coming out, I really like the FF3 iPad, but considering this is raster graphics and not polygonal vectors, I would assume not. However I don’t want to purchase this until I know for sure. It’d be cool if Square would let people know.
