Civ 5 Designer Announces New Studio, Kickstarts Game

Jon Shafer, lead designer of Firaxis Games’ Sid Meier’s Civilization V, has announced that he has founded Conifer Games, a Michigan-based indie studio. Conifer’s first project will be “Jon Shafer’s At the Gates,” which started its Kickstarter campaign today.

At the Gates is a historical turn-based strategy title for the PC set in the waning days of the Roman Empire and casts you as the leader of a barbarian tribe, ready to fill the power vacuum left by a great power in decline. You must compete not only against other nations, but with an environment that does not eagerly feed your people and armies. The resources of the world are constantly depleting, requiring you to move your tribe in search of new ones – or to pillage those of your neighbors.

With 29 days to go, the At the Gates Kickstarter has already reached $12,000 of its $40,000 goal. The team currently has a a fully-playable prototype which includes a rough implementation of every major feature, and the launch target for the game is the first half of 2014.

This is what everyone should do when they do a kicksarter: Have legitimate proof you have worked on something, in the form of gameplay.
