Cliffy B: Gears of War Movie “in development hell”

Things haven’t gone so well for the Gears of War movie. Initially announced back in 2007, it’s been plagued with all sorts of misfortunes. The supposed director Len Wiseman left the project, and the budget and story have apparently been scaled way back.

Cliff Bleszinski offered little encouragement at E3 when I spoke with him before the Gears of War 3 demo. Here’s what the man said.

Q: Any progress on the Gears of War movie?

Cliff Bleszinksi: “It’s in development hell right now. Who knows what’ll happen. It took however many years for Peter Jackson to make Lord of the Rings. Hollywood is a complicated beast. There’s all sorts of weirdness going on with who’s working on it, what’s going on here and there. But, hopefully it happens. Maybe the Gears 3 success will generate more interest in it. I’d love to see it. I’d rather have a movie that’s great and true to the franchise, than a movie that sucks. I’d rather not have a movie, than a movie that sucks.”

Stay tuned for the full interview with Cliff Bleszinski.

I agree with Cliff, I would rather not have a movie, than a movie that sucks.

Dude is nearly as big of a tool as Derek Smart. Only difference is Cliffy B. (who the hell calls them self that on purpose?) makes mass market crap and Smart makes niche crap. Either way they both make crap and try and sell it as the biggest thing since the discovery of fire.

Not trying to be , but chill out on cliff, him and his team have done an excellent job on the gears franchise, don’t post if you didn’t like the series because millions of others do, and I also agree, I really hope a movie does release but if the movie has any chance of being a fail then no movie would be a better idea…

They don’t have to make a cgi film, just play the games! They have all the cinematics that you would see in a feature film anyways.

I agree with moribundi… a CGI film would definatley be the way to go.. If they do make the movie. personally.. i think it should be CGI rather then making the movie a massive fail on the franchise.

A CGI movie really ? I think this is a terrible idea. It would destroy gears of wars reputation. I agree having the actors voices from the game would be amazing but i really feel strongly that this movie deservs better than to be a CGI movie. Some movies fit this perfectly and some movies don’t,this is one of them. I think it would just be amazing and breathe taking to see this movie as a live action film in the cinemas but for it to be a CGI or animation i think it would take the ‘WOW’ factor away from the audience viewing it. I love gears of war and am a massive fan and collector but i agree if the movie is going to suck i would rather not see one at all. I think it would destroy the image And give people even more things to complain about this game. But to see it as an amazing blockbuster would be amense. But i feel really strongly that a CGI film would take alot of potential away from this movie. Also this movie would need someone commited, patient and strong willed to do this movie justice. Maybe somebody like Peter Jackson. Having seen what he did to the lord of the rings movies and how he portrayed there villains i think he would do an amazing job to this movie and hope this movie comes out soon. BUT NOT IN CG1 ! i will take a Chainsaw to my COG tags if it is in CG1 ! :)

First of a CGI would be stupid and horrible… i believe that an live action movie would be intense…i agree with Lewis Speak.. if its a CGI i wouldnt watch it… i personally dont like cartoon/computer generated movies/shows… i personaly believe that a movie like Lord of the Rings or the dark knight are excellently portrayed an i hope that gears the movie would be just like that, the action and storyline like lord of the rings, and the intensity of the characters and fight scenes like dark knight…

I totally agree. I think that filming this movie as a CGI movie would take the intense feeling away from the audience in action pact scenes. For example the scene where Marcus finnally kills the queen. You can’t have moments like that in CGI or animation. It would suck ! And yes in the game it works perfectly fine but you would exspect that from a game but to view intense scenes like that in CGI or animation would destroy the atmosphere that the film had created through out the film.

remember when they made DOOM? That sucked, it could have been so much more… I would rather have NO gears movie than a crappy slapped together version. This is a great videogame trilogy that could be well done. This needs a high dollar production team and needs to be done right. Michael Bay (Transformers) would be a good start. Try not to get totally crappy actors.

I totally agree with alla ya’ll its all good points but if its done properly then yes cgi could work but i’m more into the whole live action thing thats more exciting maybe if peter jackson and michael bay worked as a team they could perfect it cause peter’s amazing eye for detail and michael’s super hero strengthed slowmo lol but either way cgi or live action as long as it does justice to the hands and the comics I would be happy i’m a mahoosive fan and have been diein to see this since I heard and as for the line up well cole. Could be done ay speight as he voices him and cole ‘s modled on him but surely to do his voice he’d be making strange faces and as for baird well ryan reynolds for attitude is a great start ya got the latino dude from saw 2 for santiago and I personally believe that mickey rouke could pull off marcus fenix and anya well everyone would love to see the oh so sexy scarlet johanson :-) I know I would, i’m a little two tired for the rest of the cast.

I think the whole story behind GOW is brilliant. The characters have real issues we can all relate to, and after playing the games, I found myself reading the books. The story is insatiable, and to see the characters and the tale brought to life through a film, would be most amazing. The reality is, you cannot make everyone happy. Some will be disappointed in the film (if one is produced) I find my self a little worried that my expectations will be too high. But for non gamers and non readers, I believe this offers them the opportunity to indulge in a seriously moving and action packed experience, that I have no doubt they will enjoy.

The voices behind the main characters… I believe could pull off the roles… Especially in Marcus’ place, his voice would be hard to find another like, plus Jogn Dimaggio with a do rag, hair dyed and some movie make up, would look a fair bit like Marcus. Lets see what he thinks of that lol.

Thanks for reading. Hope they come up with something. =)

Look i don’t care someone has got to make this film. With the FX these days anything can be done. It’s the best game so why can’t it be done. If i had the money and backing i would spend the rest of my life making this film with the passion that Peter Jackson did for Lord Of The Rings.
