Company of Heroes 2 Expansion Takes On Battle of the Bulge

The term “standalone expansion” usually strikes me as a little strange and unhelpful, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few we can’t look forward to. One such example is Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault, a newly announced single-player campaign due this November.

If you’re not familiar enough with World War II history to know why the Ardennes region is important, you may recognize this campaign by another name: The Battle of the Bulge.

Set in 1944, Ardennes Assault puts players in control of three US companies defending themselves against a surprise German offensive. Players will need to hold the line in the densely forested area before regrouping and attempting to drive the enemy from the region. The finished campaign will include 18 scenarios, in which player choices matter. Upgrades, units, and veterancy are carried over between missions, so just like the actual battle, any losses you sustain are permanent until the campaign ends.

We’ll have to wait until November to speak of Ardennes Assault’s quality, but representatives from Relic were told that it “feels like Company of Heroes 2.5,” which is certainly strong praise. Those interested in strategy games or World War II history will certainly want to check it out.
