Connecticut Senator Searching for “Rape Scene” in GTA IV

Anyone who’s played GTA IV remembers that infamous rape scene in the game, which allowed to accumulate points and…what’s that? You…you don’t remember that? Oooooh, that’s right, because there wasn’t one. Well, try explaining that to Connecticut Senator, Gayle Slossberg (D). She’s apparently convinced that the rape scene is there, she just has to get far enough along in the game to access it. At a press conference last week, she stated a law requiring clearer warning labels was needed to curb the corruption of youth. She doesn’t seem to know quite what the labels should read though, considering this statement on them:

“I mean what would it say? ‘This game will make you a sociopath’?”

Yeah, they really need to label those games better to make sure parents know about all the wild and crazy scenarios that aren’t actually in the game itself. Like how in Pokemon Snap, Pikachu would sometimes sell you drugs in exchange for sexual favors. That got you bonus points from Professor Oak, as I recall.

If you can’t understand that M is for mature (which of course it even tells you that) and that its like ages 17+ then you shouldn’t be allowed run for public offices or have kids. Yes children should be protected but its like parents do nothing and except everything to just work out and when it doesn’t its automatically somebody else fault. Reminds me so much of Ned Flanders parents on the Simpson’s episode where we find out that he was an out of control child and his parents tell his doctor “Man we tried nothing and are out of ideas!”.

Mooshimooshi, you are a major problem with what is wrong with American politics. Conservative are from the Republican party (R) and liberals are from the Democratic party (D) as in “Well, try explaining that to Connecticut Senator, le Slossberg (D).” Maybe you and Senator Slossberg can both move to Canada and save all of our elections from uninformed voters.

I really hate how people like you automatically assume what peoples views are on things based on what party they’re in.

Ron Whitaker

On June 25, 2008 at 10:54 pm

There is indeed such a thing as a conservative Democrat and a liberal Republican. You’re much better served to determine a politician’s views by listening to their positions on the issues.

As to the substance of the article, it only reinforces what I have always said: People who don’t play games will believe anything they hear about them, with or without substantive proof. Our hobby, our industry, and our pastime is currently suffering the same tribulations that rock & roll music did in the 50′s and 60′s, where it was thought to be demonizing America’s youth.

Each generation finds its entertainment where it will. No study has ever proven a causal link between gaming and violence, and I doubt that any reputable study ever will. Give it a few years, and gaming will be as mainstream as rock music is today, and some new technological marvel will be ‘the devil’ for people to rail at.

Ron,

thank god someone else understands the intricacies of political/ideological labels.

Jerk,
I may simply be re-posting Ron’s comment but, just because you’re a democrat doesn’t mean that you can’t be socially “conservative” and just because you’re a republican doesn’t mean you can’t be socially “progressive” sometimes party affiliations are simply about policy rather than… oh I don’t know… personal social agendas…. kinda like how there’s Log Cabin Republicans… they’re , but they identify as republicans because they want to promote fiscal conservatism and small government. just because you agree with and identify with a party doesn’t mean you have to swallow the party line hook worm and sinker.. so please for the love of god GB 2 4chan

DancingCorpse

On June 26, 2008 at 12:08 am

Wow, I just had an epitome reading these comments, or something like it, not sure.

But I would think that people in the gaming community talking politics maturely would mean soon we will have political protest in games just like Rock did and we have started moving out of the “137S 411 |345|-| \/1|>30 64|\/|35!!11!!1!!1!” (“lets all bash video games!”) era.

i got an awesome idea for that insane senator…. how about u go to new york, go up to sam houser and ask him “did u put a rape scene in?” i reckon its much easier than assuming there is one and looking for it, while in the mean time saying its corrupting our minds… pfft off u american politicians….. u remind me of jack thompson

hehe – for us europeans every sex-related (videogame-)news from america is worth a long loud laugh. i just hope that this kind of “problems” will not happen in europe, but hey … we even show tits on tv (and i like that).

Wasn’t it a senator or some crap that you raped in the game? Seriously, who the hell did she hear this from? Her own 7 year old? Some other politician who heard it from a friend of a friends friend? teh interwebz? wtf….

Note – I don’t know if she has any kids, and if so what age.

Back on topic, she probably just needs a reason to play this awesome game!

What I think is interesting is that while America in general has prudish attitudes on sex there is an ever present interest gap in our society. We have lawmakers looking for soundbytes, and possibly even personally concerned and wanting to do the right thing who can’t be bothered to do their own research and react inappropriately.

The sad thing is the American populace will not take them to task for their actions because overall I think we’re apathetic to the issues of government and focused on just putting food on the table and wondering who is going to be in the world series or whatever starlet is drunkenly cajoling about in Hollywood. We seem to enjoy the divisive nature of politics rather than the concerted self-interest in representation.

Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green.. its all the same down deep – money and power.

(Yes I’m a cynic)

Forester

On June 27, 2008 at 6:23 pm

She is clearly just making a big deal out of this so she can go play the game like it’s her job. “Sorry can’t vote on that bill right now I’m too busy playing this so I can find all the obscene content.”

I love how 1 + 1 manages to become 1.99, or 99.1, or 0.2 in some people’s worlds. Maybe if you wish for something hard enough there will be a magical fairy coming along to make it true?

From my experience as a fuzzy foreigner living in the US for the last 10 yrs, it always seems the attacks on video games and media come from democrats (ie. Tipper Gore, Joe Leiberman) trying to show they are into ‘true’ US family values. From watching their efforts to put forth ‘new’ rules and laws that fix things already covered by existing laws, I have come to assume it’s all a dog n pony show for brownie points with the rest of conservative America. I guess it helps their perception that middle America sees democrats as dope smoking socialists (when that’s really the description of Canadians hehe).

I don’t really understand the crazy sex conservatism, however. Even here in liberal California, people have gone so far PC that they’ve come around the other side to be hardliners on anything slightly marginal. If you speak up, you get labeled, then forever more you are ‘one of them’, rather than the neighbour with different views.

I think the US gov needs to create a training program for the politicians to learn how to use the internet so they can edumacate themselves with a couple of google searches on their subject before they speak out loud and look like idiots (as with ol le in this story).

le Slossberg is a state senator not an actual senator in the US Congress. The Senators from CT are Chris Dodd and Joe Leiberman. Slossberg represents represents 3 towns, not even big towns.

i’m not quite too sure why people do this sort of stuff; is it to gain popularity from overly concerned parents? is it because they just hate these games? or is it because they actually believe that a video game can cause a kid to become a psychopath who runs around flaunting his Russian accent and shooting random people on the street? in any case, there really isn’t any proof that a video game can cause any really serious psychological changes in the minds of perfectly normal teens and children (teens in this case since blood and shooting isn’t appropriate for children i guess). the only exceptions to this would probably be the easily influenced(they exist, otherwise weird cults wouldn’t) or the mentally unsound. if children were influenced by the videogame then it’d also be possible to say that violent movies or radio programs or books would also cause a normal kid to suddenly go on a homicidal rampage through his town. Hell, some kids can’t even drive properly outside of a video game! (i know this because i’m still trying to learn how to drive…) if reading the lord of the flies causes kids to become cultist murderers then why haven’t i heard of it yet? (if it does then screw me). why would anyone be angered at a game? sure you kill people but an ambulance arrives a few seconds later and revives them, quite possibly it strips the teen of any rational responsibility but then what kind of teen who drives like most people do when playing GTA deserves to be called “responsible”?

Jesus Yamato

On June 27, 2008 at 10:56 pm

by the way, please ignore my horrible punctuation and run-on sentences. when i rant at something i usually throw my grammar rules out the window.

also, i understand that a certain numbers of teens did go out and shoot people/police officers and rob banks from one time to another that blamed their actions on playing violent games like GTA. but then you have to take into consideration that they might just be looking for some bull way out of life in jail. think of it as a less obvious Twinkie defense (fairly widely known but look it up if you don’t).

mooshimooshi, you aren’t going to move to Canada (I always hear people say that, but oddly, no one does), though I wish when people said that they were forced too…

If you are dumb enough to move countries because a Senator is complaining about a videogame, I truly hope you do leave.

Ok, i mean with the exception of putting a huge label on the game warning people about the violence in any video game…wait, they have that, they are called ratings even movies have them, the consoles already have parental controls and there was a study in which 80% of retail workewrs did NOT sell mature or adult only games(pretty good since there mostly kids them selves). What she needs to focus on is things like…oh, lets say REAL rape or REAL violence. I mean c’mon. Its just a video game.

damn … will there be a status report to the findings of her ? does she have a blog of some sorts ? i think she owes it to the gamers to report her findings in any way – even if she has to say something like: “sorry, but i couldn´t find the rape scenes … i was only able to kill about 100 people, but i did not find the rape button.”

Democrats want to put pillows on every solid object now days, they want to control everything and make the world ‘safe’ there is no safe, sorry to say, we’ll all die, and we all could die tomorow from choking on a piece of gum or even getting hit by ricochet bullets from a gang fight a few blocks away, happens.
My regards to this lady, she obviously hasn’t done her homework before she took the test, this will (hopefully) backfire on her and the half-wit will be (at the very least) laughed at. Please, please, can we make her responsible for her actions, I know thats hard in todays government.

But all in all, I hope she enjoys the game, I certainly did

How bout real rape?

Zippy

On July 13, 2008 at 10:36 am

Well…with the exception of idiots like GTA GOD there… you people make some very good points.

My personal thoughts…She wants to gain favor from parents and other idiots who cant take responsibility for themselves while still being able to play the game freely herself. Using a statement like this lets her “test” the game to find this “scene” while still making her look like a messiah to all the video game activists out there.

Rockstar should sue her for slander. If I were them I would make it an extremely trivial amount just to make a case out of her. “Look here America, it doesnt matter who or what you are, if you blatantly lie about us and diminish our reputation, it is your reputation that suffers not ours. Oh and thanks for raising our sales with all the free publicity.”
