Crysis 2 Mod Tools Update — Crytek to Follow Epic’s UDK Business Model?

If you haven’t already heard about the Crysis 2 mod tools coming this summer,

The official Crymod website has been updated–the news is both good and bad.

The bad?

The forum is temporarily offline for server upgrades.

The good?

An open letter to the Crymod community with some exciting news:

Our next release will be the Crysis 2 Editor, this is for those of you who want to create content for Crysis 2. In August 2011, we will launch our Free CryENGINE SDK for all of you who want to create totally new content on CryENGINE 3. If you just want to make fun, free projects, you can do that free of charge. If you want to try and commercialize your game, we’ll be here to help you with that.

Epic Games has had tremendous success with its Unreal Development Kit, from which we’ve seen a number of popular indie titles emerge. With this CryENGINE SDK, Crytek may just usurp Epic’s monopoly on this market.

I think this is awesome! I used to map for CS:S and the fact alone that users can add mods+create maps adds so much more value to a game. Especially for Crysis 2 on the Crytech engine…man I can’t WAIT to see some of the things people are going to come up with!
