Crytek CEO Says Halo = Meh.

Crysis Take Aim

Game Informer recently scored a juicy interview with Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli. Among the obvious topics of Crysis and its imminent release, the interview covers topics such as DX10 vs. DX10.1, engine licensing, Crytek’s future IPs, consoles, and Yerli’s (distant) opinions on Far Cry 2, Bioshock, & the ubiquitous Halo series.

Some highlights from the interview:

  • DX10.1 making DX10 hardware obsolete is complete “bollocks”.
  • As far as Crytek is concerned, DX10.1 is years ahead of the hardware, thus software.
  • Tons of developers are waiting to license CryEngine 2.
  • CryEngine 2 is running on consoles.
  • Despite the above, Crysis is NOT coming to console anytime soon.
  • Crysis on console is a possibility (with compromise).
  • Yerli is impressed with Ubisoft Montreal’s progress with Far Cry 2.
  • Yerli was impressed with the Bioshock PC demo.
  • Yerli finds the average console shooter too “dumbed down”.
  • Halo, Halo 2, and (probably) Halo 3 pretty much bore Yerli.
  • Now before you console fanboys go “ZOMG! Dis n00b R Teh Lame! Halo3 Iz Da Bestest Evar!”, realize that this is just the opinion of one man who has pretty much made a living (and a damn good one) off designing cutting edge technology for PC. If you actually read the article in scrutiny, you would get the impression that Yerli isn’t really anti-console at all; however, he certainly regards the PC platform as his bread and butter. Based on his many recent interviews, Yerli has always touted his company as forerunners for cutting edge technology. With that said, you certainly get the impression that Yerli is very confident that Crysis will be well received come November. Even his peers are calling Crysis the benchmark for developers to judge by.

Or as the saying goes: “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up.”

He’s right. The Halo series consists of slightly above average FPS games that are only popular due to a massive PR/hype engine behind them, and the fact that consoles have never really had any good, playable FPSs. It’s why PC gamers didn’t raise too much of a fuss over waiting for 3 years to get Halo 2 after it was already on XBox.

Judging from the MP beta for Crysis, it’s all Graphics and no gameplay, it just wasn’t fun at all.

Single player looks to a very generic experience too, Farcry was kinda boring too, so, you know, he’s one to talk.

I get the impression he likes to create games more than play them. When he does play a game, he ends up breaking them down into their technical details. So yeah, he’s sort of one-sided when it comes to judging a game.

That was a really intelligent interview.

I agree he may be a little shy on the console side of the spectrum, but he’s right about the hardware constraints. I’ll still maintain the PC is by far the most advanced way to get the most out of a game since the upgradeability factor exists on the PC.

I’ll also hold to the opinion that the PC is also one of the biggest money pits, second only to the car, in this world. :???:

I don’t understand how anyone says that Crysis beta is “boring.”

Since they never list a single reason.

They don’t list reasons because they’re bitter that they don’t actually HAVE the beta; or that they’ve only seen videos; or that they’re just rampant fanboys.

I personally liked Far Cry. I still do. I think it’s still much better than many other fps shooters. And Halos are overrated, little better than average games that are hyped too much (In my opinion), I’m not saying that it’s a bad game.

I never said the Beta was boring, I just said it wasn’t fun, I’m not the only one too, I heard from a few others that it’s nothing excitable, the gameplay has all been seen before and has been done far better.

Ubisoft seem to have taken FarCry and fixed the stuff that no-one liked and are making a sequel that features all the good stuff and none of the bad stuff from the first game, the mutants were ridiculous if you ask me, more of an annoyance than a gameplay element.

Crytek however seem to be dazzling us with pretty graphics and high detail physics rather than making a game that look genuinely fun to play.

i enjoyed it, there are alot of things in it you dont find in other fps’. i must admit though i am a graphics whore, so that could be tainting my reasoning.

It’s the graphics that seem to have most games mags and sites foaming at the mouth with anticipation, I’ve always, always believed that gameplay > graphics, I don’t care for your fancy parallax mapping or your HDR, I just want a game that plays well, If it looks good it’s a bonus, Which is why games like GoldenEye, Streets of Rage, Doom, Duke3D and the original SNES Mario Kart will always have a place in my game collection.

I have the Crysis beta, and I never played it.

not because of lack of interest, but because I’m out woman hunting.

But anyway, I enjoyed the first Halo, it (storyline) was fun. Was it ‘omg super awesome?’ no.
    But it wasn’t , either.

I’m with you weclock, and it’s the multiplayer that truly makes Halo(s) standout on a console (for me anyways).

doom and goldeneye at least had stellar graphics for their respective era’s i do agree with you dragon gameplay is more important than graphics but i sure do love me some parallax mapping.

I agree with him, and share the same preferences.

Far Cry was fun up until about midgame, where it got boring and repetitive. The Trygens and mercenaries weren’t fun to fight.

Crysis looks cool, and the suit mechanics should liven Crytek’s standard ops a bit. The multiplayer videos I’ve watched look good.

Halo is a 7 on a good day. It’s a great CONSOLE FPS, but compared to PC fare it worsens considerably.
