One of the first leagues for professional gaming has announced that they are shutting down and ceasing all their operations immediately. The Cyberathlete Professional League was founded in 1997 to promote and sanction video game competitions, and has slowly grown over the years to sponsor events around the world. Unfortunately, because of “the current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate,” the CPL has now been forced to shut down all their current operations. As such, any tournaments scheduled for 2008 have now been canceled, though prizes won in past tournaments will still be doled out.
That’s actually kind of sad that one of the pioneers of professional gaming has fallen on hard times. They’ve only said that they’re halting all their operations though, so they might be revived if they can scrape together some more funding. That’s quite a longshot though.
