Daily Dose of Humor: Conservative Site Charges “Explicitly Graphic Sexual Intercourse” in Mass Effect

According to Cybercast News Service BioWare’s Mass Effect features “explicitly graphic sexual intercourse” and is porn aimed at minors. Funny I thought the big M on the package meant Mature.

The game is “clearly marketed to minors,” Cathy Ruse, a lawyer and senior fellow for legal studies at the Family Research Council, told Cybercast News Service.

“There are cultural implications for feeding porn to kids in this way,” and “when you do this, you’re teaching them a distorted lesson about human sexuality and human dignity. These are lessons that they will take with them into adulthood and ultimately society,” Ruse said.

Apparently these experts have watched an entirely different scene than the rest of us, because they describe it as “a cutscene in which the characters copulate in full digital nudity.” The video in question is one I’m sure you’re familiar with, but in case you missed it, here’s the link. Notice the clip is properly age gated because contrary to the implications of the article, Mass Effect isn’t marketed to children.

The other thing that has their panties in a bunch is that they interpret the excerpt as a lesbian sex scene as well.

Bob Waliszewki, media specialist with Focus on the Family, told Cybercast News Service, “One can use the media to portray some very healthy forms of sexuality. And when done wisely with taste and age-appropriateness, it can be done well.”

“Unfortunately,” he said, “Mass Effect doesn’t do that and even goes so far as to allow homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality and heterosexuality outside of its proper context of marriage.”

Of course had they played the game, they might realize the scene technically can’t be classified as a homosexual encounter as the Asari species are hermaphrodites.

The afore mentioned Cathy Ruse also tried to prove that the game could legally be considered porn in some states.

“Most states have what’s called ‘Harmful to Minors’ laws on the books that say that selling sexual material that a jury would deem ‘patently offensive to minors, which lacks literary, artistic, political or scientific value.’ … might be prosecutable.”

However, she also noted that these laws are “very likely not enforced.” Rather than new laws, “we need state and local prosecutors with spines and backbones to prosecute some of these companies that are violating the law” in order to prevent children from being exposed to indecent material, she said.

SourceWatch reports that Cybernet News Service is a site for conservative extremists.

Cybercast News Service (CNS) is a subsidiary of the conservative news monitoring group, the Media Research Center (MRC)…

Media Research Center Inc. is a conservative media watchdog group run by president and founder Brent Bozell. The Center… is funded by larger right-wing foundations…

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve seen racier stuff on broadcast television. Not only is this article from Cybercast News Service poorly written and researched, it seems the implications that their experts are leveling are entirely based on assumptions and/or religious and moral bias. It’s bad journalism to represent an opinion as fact. I find it very sad that many people will just take this article as the God given truth without checking the facts for themselves.

As a… not conservative, I find these people give you a bad name. I know many conservatives but these people are just crazy.

eh.. if there’s something explicitly graphic in Mass Effect, I somehow missed it. I just think the conservatives can’t handle anything involving lesbian sex. People in this country really need to grow the hell up and stop making such a big deal out of every day things.

If a game is rated mature then thats exactly what it means. Mature audiences only should be playing it. And if mature audiences are the only ones playing it then it stands to reason that the mature audience can understand what it is happening. This isn’t about sexually explicit content, it’s about bad parenting.

When I purchased my copy of Mass Effect at BB, I was asked for my ID. I am 36 years old and as flattered as I was, I don’t look 17. ME is not aimed at kids, my son is 11 and wants to play it because it is from BioWare and he LOVES KOTOR (and KOTOR II). I told him that he couldn’t play it because it was M for Mature. Outside of Halo and Halo2, he is not allowed to play any M games. That’s my call as a parent and my job. I hope that BioWare comes out with something in the T category. Frankly, I don’t see anything in the linked cut scene that is any worse than what I have seen on Nip/Tuck or Dirt on FX. And I don’t let my son watch those, either. Some people have to keep the pot stirred up all the time, that’s seem to be the way of things. There always has to be a boogeyman…just my two cents.
