Dark Souls Director ‘Sad’, Considering Easy Mode

You must really suck at playing Dark Souls. Yes, you. Specifically, the person now reading this post. You must really, really suck at it. Dark Souls is, of course, notoriously difficult. So much so that the advertising reveled in it (one ad even quoted a review, “you. will. die.”,) and the game got a Prepare To Die Edition just to rub it in. But was it too difficult? Apparently, Director Hidetaka Miyazaki thinks so, and via OXM, he confirmed in an interview that he’s considering giving it an easy mode.

“I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult,” he said “As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty.” So what’s the problem? “Having said that,” he continued, “it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games.”

I don’t particularly think Dark Souls failed to advertise its famous difficulty, but OK. And it’s fair to say that incredible difficulty is not for everyone, especially if it’s so hard it stops being fun. So what do you think, Game Fronters? Sound off in comments.

I can see why he would be saddened, and it is definitely the case that many games coddle their players, but there does come a point where something is so hard that it stops being fun. If someone hears that a game is so difficult that they probably won’t ever finish it, that may sound like a waste of money to them. I would like to play this game at some point, but I also have obligations that eat up enormous amounts of time, so knowing that I would be replaying sections over and over doesn’t fit with my life right now.

The beauty of Dark Souls is that it makes the following true: the end justifies the means. The game brings you down to your lowest and to your highest moments like no other game has done. It’ll tear your heart out, and then make you the happiest dude alive. Just watch Jame’s walkthrough from this website. To me, for a game to really get into you like this unlike any other games makes this a top 5 game all time. Also, for the people that do get suck, this game got so much wiki and walkthroughs that it shouldn’t be a problem at all.

It could’ve been harder… I rejoice of the thought of losing half of one’s life bar each time you die… Then, the game would have a GAME OVER. The sole tension would be overwhelmingly delicious.

I thought the difficulty was one of the main selling points. It would be a shame to lower one of the main points of the game just because of some complaints.
