Darkest Dungeon Will Extinguish Your Soul, Kickstarting Soon
Everyone loves a good dungeon romp, right? Looting for gold, laughing as your mostly-naked Barbarian vanquishes wave after wave of demon spawn with half-hearted swings of his Morning Star.
Not all dungeons are cheery, frolic-filled treasure fests, however. Not all dungeons are created equal.
Darkest Dungeon, based on the above trailer, looks to be a fresh take on the dungeon crawler genre. The difficulty is unforgiving, the art is has a dark, scary, cartoon-y feel to it, and the characters are not presented as near-immortal freedom keepers, but rahter as complex beings whose feelings will immediately impact what’s possible in the game? How often do you get the feeling that your character is legitimately frightened when they’re traversing the unknown darkness?
All I know about Darkest Dungeon is what’s surfaced in the last 24 hours: Red Hook Studios is the developer, and this appears to be their first game. There’s a fresh YouTube trailer, a Twitter account that’s less than 24 hours old, and a blog that outlines the goal of Darkest Dungeon. Parts of today’s post are below:
The concept behind Darkest Dungeon is to put the dungeon back in “dungeon crawler.” The environment itself is an antagonist – a scary, haunted place where your chances of survival are slim, hordes of terrifying monsters notwithstanding.
Each and every adventurer you recruit will develop a unique combination of predispositions, proclivities, flaws and strengths – factors that must be carefully considered when forming a party and leading it through horrific environs. Furthermore, how you perform in the dungeon will have lasting and impactful consequences on their continued development. You are put smack-dab in the role of a squad leader or sports team manager, doing your best to keep the human factors from fracturing your team or destroying their effectiveness.
A Kickstarter is coming soon, although it sounds like development is well under way. We’ll keep you posted as more details filter in, especially when Red Hook Studios crowdfunding initiative goes live.
