DayZ’s Dean Hall ‘Very Angry’ About The War Z
The controversy surrounding open world zombie title The War Z isn’t just affecting players of that game — it has implications for Dean “Rocket” Hall, the creator of DayZ.
Writing on Reddit, Hall said that he’s “very angry” about the situation surrounding The War Z. If you’re unfamiliar, DayZ is a mod for Arma 2 that turns the game into a zombie survival title, in which players can work together to survive, or decide to kill one another. The popularity of DayZ has been huge, and the similarities between it and The War Z are hard to ignore, from the name to the subject matter.
Not only does The War Z riff on the core concept of Hall’s game, there’s reportedly confusion for many people between which game is which. This was compounded by struggles after The War Z was released on Steam in an alpha state, and players complained that features detailed on the Steam page as being in the game weren’t in the game.
Hall said on Reddit that friends and family have confused his game (which is free as a mod, but a retail standalone version currently is in the works) with The War Z, and even gotten angry with him over allegations of shady business practices by Hammerpoint, the company behind The War Z. Hall previously said The War Z situation has had a pretty negative effect on his mental state, and that he even considered quitting over it.
Lots of developers in video games borrow from one another — it’s part of how innovation in the medium works. But even with that said, the atmosphere surrounding the idea of DayZ and the game that more or less stole the concept, The War Z, is a sticky one. Hall clearly thinks that there’s something underhanded in the creation of The War Z alongside his game; do you agree with him? The War Z’s practices so far have definitely come across as less than consumer-friendly, but Hall certainly doesn’t have a patent on the idea of fighting zombies while fighting other players.
