DC Universe Online Shows ‘Free to Play is Huge’ on PS3

Some 70 percent of the DC Universe Online player base uses the Playstation 3 to log into Sony Online Entertainment’s superhero MMO, and there are a few important lessons to take away from that, says SOE head John Smedley.

First, it shows that consoles are a viable platform for MMOs, Smedley told GamesIndustry. Second, it shows that the free-to-play market works on the consoles, specifically using the Playstation Network.

Smedley said that convincing Sony that free-to-play could work on its console was tough at first.

“I admit there was a mindset where when you use the word ‘free’ people pause. ‘Wait a minute, what do you mean by free?’ But even then people want to see the results. With DC Universe Online the split that we’re seeing ended the debate right there.”

Going free, however, resulted in an immediate uptick in players after the game went free in October. And Smedley says that the Sony keeps a close eye on the player base in DCUO and how it fluctuates between

I’m not surprised that most of the DCUO players are on PS3. There is clearly a difference in the amount of MMO competition when comparing PS3 and PC.
