Dead Island: Riptide – Gameplay Reveal Video

Deep Silver has released pre-alpha gameplay footage of Dead Island: Riptide, showcasing the game’s Hub Defense missions, new to the series.

Hub Defense missions involve a set-up stage that allows players to prepare their “base” for an oncoming zombie swarm by building turrets and fences, setting up minefields, and tossing propane tanks in convenient locations. The base also includes a bounty of ammo and a crafting station, as well as NPC allies — who seem to be slightly more useful alive than dead. Thereafter, players fight off waves of zombies, with some limited time to refresh defenses between waves.

While the Hub Missions give players the option to be focused on firearms, the game itself remains melee-centric.

New mission type aside, it seems little has changed since Dead Island 1, making Riptide look more like a standalone expansion pack than a sequel/spinoff, but the footage is pre-alpha.

I know it’s pre-alpha, but really, it’s exactly the same game.
Same models, same sounds, same animations, same textures, same HUD, same EVERYTHING.
I’m not saying it will be bad, but nobody would have noticed a difference if this was a DLC and not a whole new game.
