Dead Island Tries Survival Horror With Escape Dead Island
The Dead Island series has really been a mixed bag so far, but you can’t say the franchise isn’t willing to experiment. After putting out a MOBA-styled version of the zombie shooter, Deep Silver is testing the waters yet again with Escape Dead Island, a single-player survival horror title that combines zombie-killing with Groundhog Day-like time loops.
Escape Dead Island follows Cliff Calo, who travels to Banoi to document the unexplained outbreak shortly after the original game. Not only does his team encounter the zombie threat, Cliff himself starts experiencing deja vu and time resets, although he can keep collected items that unlock new story branches. While the game appears to have all the zombie action of previous titles, it will be a fully single-player experience that emphasizes stealth gameplay and the mystery behind the island. Escape Dead Island will also be cel-shaded, a unique style for the series so far.
Escape Dead Island is slated for an autumn 2014 release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms. While I expect the new gameplay shouldn’t mix up Dead Island’s formula too much, it’s an interesting twist that will keep fans entertained until Dead Island 2. Although if the survival approach ends up working out for the franchise overall, you won’t see me complaining.
