Dead Space 2 Prequel Will Be Downloadable

Dead Space 2 developer Visceral Games has announced Dead Space Ignition, a downloadable prequel to the upcoming game that will be available on Xbox Live and the Playstation Network in the Fall.

But it sounds a little weird.

Visceral’s press release describes it as a “Choose Your Own Adventure” (what, like Goosebumps?) style of narrative. It’ll be some kind of interactive comic book with three different “hacking” minigames and which will feature arcade-style play. Insert puzzled head-scratching here.

And it’ll feature four different endings resulting from all this adventure-choosing, each of which unlocks various stuff to use in Dead Space 2, including a suit for main character Isaac Clark.

The game’s being written and illustrated by Antony Johnston, the comic artist who put together the 2008 Dead Space comic series that prequels the first game. That’ll definitely be cool, seeing as the first set of comics were gory and interesting, and they added quite a bit to the story.

Ignition will do the same and chiefly by explaining the outbreak of the hideous Necromorphs in the hours before Isaac’s arrival on the scene.

More Dead Space is pretty much always a good thing. Hopefully Ignition’s Fall release will make the wait to Jan. 25, 2011, for Dead Space 2 a little easier to handle. And it seems if you order the Collector’s Edition Dead Space 2 copy, you’ll get the Wii-only title Dead Space: Extraction as well.
