Dead Space Short Intros New Character, Possibly for Dead Space 3
The official Dead Space website has featured a new short film in the style of a graphic novel that drops a new character and a new setting into the Dead Space 3 universe.
You can check out the video below, which is all about one John Carver, a soldier on an apparently populated planet called Uxor. From what can be gleaned from the video, Uxor is the home of another of the Dead Space universe’s important and malevolent Marker artifacts — this one apparently being the fourth, according to the film — and comes under attack during the course of the film. Necromorphs, the Dead Space mutated monsters, also show up, as one might expect.
The Carver story is interesting for two reasons: 1. It’s left unfinished, suggesting that there’s more (probably in an upcoming game); 2. It suggests a new character for the Dead Space universe. Couple that with the rumors we’ve been hearing about a possible cooperative gameplay experience in Dead Space 3 involving series protagonist Isaac Clark and a new character, and you have a situation in which it looks like Visceral Games and Electronic Arts are trying to introduce us to Isaac’s new partner.
The film itself isn’t all that long, so it’s tough to be sure exactly what function Carver performs in the larger frame of Dead Space. He’s a little different from Isaac, though, and he’s got a distinctive look. It doesn’t seem too far-fetched to expect him to show up again in the future, probably in some kind of playable form.
