Destiny Was Originally a Third-Person Game

Bungie art director Ryan Ellis told Game Informer that the studio’s upcoming co-op shooter Destiny had been built as a third-person action game, but at some point they decided to make it first person.

“We wanted to make a kick-ass action game, and we decided first-person was the right place to do that,” Ellis said.

Subtext: there simply were not enough first-person shooters out there, and also probably there was marketing pressure from Acti to make a game more apparently in the Bungie wheelhouse. Destiny will probably be pretty good regardless of reasons for making it an FPS, but whatevs.

Looking forward to this game, but since it’s FP POV I’ll have to see gameplay before buying.

FP POV makes me motion sick.

I was looking forward to the idea of third-person from Bungie.
I always felt a little perturbed that I could customize my Spartan in Halo: Reach but I so rarely got to see him.

I’m hoping they at least keep the idea of third person when in the cities but first-person in combat.

What’s the point of designing you character to your particular taste of “cool” but only everyone else gets to see it?

I am also prone to motion sickness in first person games. I’d probably have been interested in this if it was third person. Ah well.

What a shame. I would have purchased a PS4 or Xbox for this feature. Ah well more money saved.
