Diablo 3 Beta Coming Q3 2011
This slide, taken from the Activision Blizzard First Quarter Calendar 2011 Results Conference Call, sums up the news on the Blizzard front.
Amid talk about Activision’s many franchises, including the announcement that as of March, Black Ops became the best-selling video game of all-time, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime set a time frame for the Diablo 3 beta.
Morhaime stated that internal company-wide testing for Diablo 3 began last week, and external beta testing is targeted for Q3 2011. He went on to explain that the window hasn’t been closed on a 2011 release date for Diablo 3, but Blizzard won’t compromise the quality of the game to squeeze it out this year.
However, if 2011 is still a possibility, then the Diablo 3 beta may come to us closer to the beginning of the 3-month Q3 period rather than the end. The StarCraft II closed beta began in February 2010; the game hit stores six months later. If Blizzard is aiming for a December launch, we may be playing Diablo 3 in July.
Morhaime also spoke about Cataclysm’s record sales, mentioned a new World of Warcraft update that is already in testing, and said information about StarCraft 2′s first expansion, Heart of the Swarm, will be announced later this month.
