Diablo 3 On Consoles: Nothing New, Move Along
An innocent tweet by Diablo 3 Community Manager “Bashiok” seems to have been passed around news sites as an earth-shattering revelation that Diablo 3 is definitely coming to console. In fact, this tweet tells us nothing new at all.
Bashiok stated that Josh Mosqueira is the lead designer of Diablo 3′s console version, something we’ve known for months. Blizzard has not been secretive about the fact that they have plans to release D3 on console if they can get the game to feel native to the platform. We already knew that they’ve had a team of people working on the project for some time now.
So why was this tweet viewed as a revelation? All that remains, once removing the bit about Mosqueira, is the “Yup,” which everyone has interpreted to mean, “Yup, Diablo 3 is confirmed for consoles.”
This is how Blizzard reveals that Diablo 3 is confirmed for consoles? With three letters in a tweet by a Community Manager? Really?
In an old interview, Jay Wilson said the following about a possible console version of D3:
We are still in active exploring mode. We haven’t officially announced a product. We like our product announcements to be a big deal. We haven’t been as secretive about this one because our biggest barrier is actually getting a console team.
A tweet saying “Yup” is not exactly a “big deal.” When Blizzard confirms D3 on console, I think they’ll put a little showmanship into it.
To settle the matter, Bashiok later tweeted:
“Yup” wasn’t meant to be an announcement. We’re still exploring a console version, but more importantly working on the PC/Mac version.
In other words: nothing new here. Move along.
