Diablo 3 Release Date: “Feburary” (PIC)

A banner recently appeared in a Rochester, Minnesota Best Buy, bearing a digital display counting down to a February 1st midnight release for Diablo 3. However, when the DiabloFans community website contacted the Best Buy this morning, a manager explained that the sign, which had been made in-house, had already been taken down as a directive from the store’s general manager.
The manager admitted the “manufacturer” (ie Blizzard) has not been “very firm” in picking a launch date, so this seems more like a miscommunication leading to this Best Buy jumping the gun rather than an actual release date leak. Given the humorously misspelled “Feburary,” I’m not exactly surprised.
In response to seeing the photo of the sign, Bashiok, the Diablo 3 community manager, stated:
Diablo III does not have a release date. Any store or person claiming otherwise is guessing. (…) We can’t really keep every individual retail shop from making up a date.
Various retail shops have listed different dates for Diablo 3 pre-orders for months — we remind you that these are simply the shops’ best guesses.
Bashiok went on to say:
We probably won’t end beta until shortly before release, and traditionally we’ve tried to announce release dates about two months before release.
If Blizzard follows its traditions, we can expect D3 to release in March at the earliest. Officially, Blizzard is still targeting “early 2012″ for Diablo 3′s release, which many not necessarily be the year’s first quarter, as per another Bashiok quote:
Sorry I wasn’t intending to imply anything by writing first quarter, just an honest mistake. Our official target is still “early 2012″. Not sure if it makes too much difference one way or the other, but I don’t want people to nitpick a mistake.
Get comfortable, folks. We’ll be waiting a whiles longer.
