Diablo III Designer Judges Fan-Photoshopped Screenshots; Explains Why They Don't Work

Ever since initial footage and screenshots were shown for Diablo III, thousands of fans have decried the game‘s new colorful and vibrant art design. A number of people have even gone out of their way to photoshop existing screenshots the way that they think the game should look. So MTV Multiplayer sat down with designer Jay Wilson to show him some of these images to ask him what he thinks. From there, Wilson basically described exactly why each visual style wouldn’t work. The reason run the gamut from technical limitations to hampering gameplay to just plain being boring. You can hear his full descriptions of these fan-photoshopped screenshots by cliking the link below.

I honestly don’t get what the big freakin’ deal is. People freaked out way back when Warcraft III was converted to 3D, and that worked out perfectly fine. I actually prefer a larger color palette to the same dull mixtures of brown and gray used by every other game touting “next-gen graphics” these days. And aside from what anyone thinks, it’s still Blizzard’s game, and they’re going to make it however they see fit. After churning out great game after great game for over a decade, I think we can give them our trust.

I hope they atleast keep the inventory system of the previous games rather than the “one item per square”… ugh

If you check the diablo 3 forums on blizzard. Its full of people trying to argue a point over the graphics. STAFU. Nobody cares about all these people ing about what they feel is right. I think every idea we see now as dumb later we will think that its much better it wasnt any other way.

All you have to do is fool with the gamma and contrast to get the “what it should look like” pictures, it really isn’t that big of a deal.

I don’t understand at all why people have a problem with more color in a game like this. Those “What it should look like” photos are incredibly washed out and boring in comparison to the actual gamescreens. If I was in charge of making a game such as this and the artists showed me the photoshopped versions I would say “Get back to the desk and use some color” These Giger-esque, colorblind fools need to lay off.

This is stupid atleast they are making the game diablo 3. I know i was waiting for this game since…. 1.08 Even tho they did patch the game back then i still was waiting for a whole new game. I still play Diablo II and i just hope that Diablo 3 comes out sooner then what most people are saying

Seriously, Diablo 3 isn’t just a “tribute to fans” — it’s the next game in the series, and I seriously think that if Blizzard just stuck with their old graphics and style/gameplay, the game would fair poorly on the market — what they’re doing is upgrading a great franchise to a new level of, in this case, detail…

Don’t fret, I find their new style to be quite refeshing…
