DICE Confirms Battlefield 3 at 30 FPS on Console

The console versions of Battlefield 3 have been receiving a lot of criticism since the first PS3 footage was shown on Jimmy Fallon’s show last week. Now, DICE has confirmed that the console versions will run at 30 frames per second, or half the frame rate on PC.

In a chat on Twitter, developer Johan Andersson said that DICE always makes console games at the frame rate. Andersson said,

we always do 30 fps on consoles, not possible to fit in vehicles, fx, scale and all players otherwise

After confirming that the console versions would also be at 720p instead of the PC version’s 1080p, many fans decried the decision. Andersson responded,

dude, 99.9% of PS3 and Xbox 360 games are 720p. and a lot of them, including MW2 is way lower than that

He then went on, saying,

we think huge levels, lots of players, great fx, destruction, vehicles & varied gameplay is more important than 1080p

Finally, when asked if he thought that it was time for Sony and Microsoft to release new consoles, he responded,

yes we want the Gen4 consoles to come out sooner rather than later, we’re ready!

Honestly, this isn’t that big a surprise. The vast majority of console games run at 720p, especially action-heavy titles like shooters. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ran at 600p on consoles, so 720p isn’t a huge departure from the norm. I certainly don’t think this will convince console gamers not to buy the game.

How long till some Activision guy comes out to say “Well, unlike the competition, our games always run at 60fps…”

lol 30fps is not bad i cant really notice a difference between 60 and 30 so no biggie. also 1080p is nothing special.

They do it because they can get away with it. Average console Joe isn’t aware of what 60fps feels like (as opposed to 30fps). What little backlash resulting ends up as a few forum threads where people just to be ing anyway. Plus, they can theoretically squeeze out a few more graphical effects if there is any surplus there to begin with.

They do a 30fps cap to PC gamers and a riot ensues. Different strokes for different folks.

There’s also things like server tick where placing a lower target framerate cap can substantially reduce network traffic. It’s a tradeoff really.

Dude, of course if you spend A LOT in a gaming machine, you expect it to work better. This is consoles….Stop whining.

What do you expect with consoles way past their prime?

Don’t say that, John! Remember when the PS3 came out and Sony said it would be relevant for a decade at least, and how they wouldn’t need to release another system during that time becasue the PS3 was that great?

Heh, along with both Sony and Microsoft saying how childish and Wii motion controls were…as both of them desperately started working on their own non childish and cool motion controls.
