Digital Sales of FFXIV: ARR Halted Following Game Woes

Square Enix has pulled the digital version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn from sale following server woes, which have prevented players from being able to log into their chosen server to play the game.

At present, players of the newly released MMORPG have been made to face long wait times. For some, the game has been almost entirely unplayable.

In a note on the game’s official Facebook page, Square Enix described the response to the game as “overwhelmingly positive.”

Square Enix went on to note that to accommodate existing players, they will be halting digital sales of the game and working to expand the game’s server capacity “in the coming days.”

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this causes.”

So once again a major publishing of a major online release has issues because they underestimated fan response. Huh.

That’s too bad. I hope that this game works out well since SE was willing to put so much into essentially remaking the game since the first version was so poor. If it is successful, it might help send a message to various companies that people don’t simply complain because they’re whiners or because they can never be satisfied.

If they think the response to the game has been overwhelmingly positive, then they don’t read their forums, their support tickets, their chat support logs, listen to telephone support calls, read fan site reviews, blogs, etc. For the last 5 days there has been several hundred forum posts an hour cussing out Square Enix for their incompetence.

Seriously, instead of having a server queue where thousands of players can wait in line, they cap the queue at between 15 and 150 depending on the time of day. This leaves tens of thousands of players pressing the character logon button over and over and over again receiving a ‘server full’ error where they are unable to join a queue.

I even wrote a script that endlessly runs the character logon sequence until successfully logged in, about 15 times per minute. Last night it took 4 hours to getted in the queue, and the night before I didn’t even manage to do so.

The worst part about this entire situation is that they refuse to implement an idle logout timer, which would greatly reduce congestion. Once players log on, they simply never log off. I’d wager that around noon over half the players logged in were inactive, and had been idle for at least 8 hours.

How can this happen to such a massive company? with their bad work completion record, But I must say the greatest and most superb graphics and storyboard writers out there. shame really.
