Dissecting New Dark Souls 2 Gameplay With James and Mitch

Information about Dark Souls 2 has been coming at a trickle. There were mentions of a new engine new engine, then an extensive Edge Magazine feature, which provided tantalizing screenshots, veiled hints, and vague philosophies (including troubling references becoming more “accessible”).

The trickle has become a flood, thanks to a 12-minute gameplay demo that debuted today on IGN. In the most basic sense, it delivered exactly what fans were looking for: Dark Souls, with improved graphics, a more efficient UI, and a rogues gallery of new, unsettling monsters. Still, it left plenty of questions. How will those torches work, exactly? What are those new icons in the HUD? Couldn’t have the graphics have been improved, y’know, even more?

Game Front video ninjas Mitchell Saltzman and James Heaney are on the case. They break down the gameplay demo in detail in the video below, dishing out the kind of analysis and speculation that will keep you going until more information is revealed.

Jesus why the hell is everyone ing about graphics, don’t you kids understand why people play supermetroid and like that even today? No one cares about graphics with gameplay this good. IMO, the DSII graphics do look very well improved anyway.

I really liked the more fluid animations. The ninjaroll was sneakier and sleeker than before.
I really hope the short dude with the axes has more moves than that, it would be sad if all he could do was a one-shot axe throw.

Only good thing about the torch is the vague possibility that the fact that its on fire might mean something gameplay wise, otherwise its just the same as the skull. boring and slightly annoying.

Now i’m just waiting for ENB’s review of the demo, like everyone else :)

I would assume they would. The Dark souls port was the first one they ever did and even said it was more work than they thought. Now that they have one under their belt, i’m confident they will learn from their mistakes

The demo was run on a PC. That was confirmed. Also running at 60 FPS on a brand new engine.

Is it just me or does anyone else agree that maybe that mustache thats attacked James’s face deserve to be some sort of super boss in DS2!
