Dota 2 Cosmetic Item Sold for $38,000

A cosmetic item for Dota 2 was sold for $38,000, constituting what is possibly the largest money trade ever for the game.

The item sold was a Pink Ethereal Flames Enduring War Dog, a rare variant of the Enduring War Dog (pictured above) available for purchase in the Dota 2 store for $12. Both items are entirely cosmetic — they change the appearance of your in-game “courier,” a donkey that transports goods to and from the shops to players on the field.

Again, the item purchased provides no benefit other than looking distinct. What’s most frightening is that $38,000 was the vendor’s buyout price — in other words, had he let the bidding continue, he could have possibly sold this item for even more.

Here’s a video of what $38,000 buys you in Dota 2:

I weep.

What is the most, in real world dollars, that you would ever spend on a cosmetic item?

It makes me sad to think that much was spent on something so pointless. You could buy a very nice car for that price.

I make it a rule not to shell out for cosmetic items since those just strike me as cash grabs. Skins used to be unlockable until companies figured out that people were willing to spend $2 a pop.
