Double Fine Will Soon Have Publishing Rights to Psychonauts

Double Fine has always owned the intellectual property rights to its 2005 3-D psychic power platformer Psychonauts, but it’ll soon own all the publishing rights to the game, too.

Double Fine’s Big Cheese Tim Schafer told Gamasutra that publishing rights have reverted to the firm from the game’s original Xbox publisher, Majesco, but there’s more financial wheeling/dealing in the works before everything’s ship-shape. When it’s complete, all proceeds for Psychonauts, which is currently available for download on Xbox Live, will go to the game’s creators.

Schafer said once everything’s sorted on the Psychonauts front, Double Fine will be making some kind of “fun” announcement that he specifically said is not a sequel to the game — if there’s going to be a Psychonauts 2, Double Fine would need a publisher interested to help foot the bill, Schafer said. So who knows what that could be.

I think I can say without qualification based on Psychonauts that any announcement about that game will be great, even if it’s just the fact that Double Fine appreciates us paying them for the game. Psychonauts is awesome. Psychonauts. Awesome.
