Our instructions for using the Dragon Age 2 Dev Console Cheats are arguably the most useful information on this page. Nevertheless, Dragon Age 2 promises to be a massive game, and massive games contain massive amounts of information. In order to marshall all this confusion, we’ve prepared this Cheats post, which will act as a repository for anything and everything useful we can find out about Dragon Age.

Dragon Age 2 Walkthrough

Dragon Age 2 Demo Walkthrough

Dragon Age 2 Unlimited Gold and XP Glitch

  1. The first step of this glitch/exploit is to choose one of the “Find and Deliver” sidequests. “Bearded Beast” is the one we used in the video, but any of them will do.
  2. Go and retrieve the item you’re supposed to be collecting. In the case of “Bearded Beast,” you’ll have to travel to the Bone Pit and retrieve the remains of the titular beast, which are on the left, in the first area.
  3. Return to the questgiver with the item you collected. For the Bearded Beast, it’s a guy named Arintal the Lessar, down by the Docks.
  4. This is the key step. Before you reach the questgiver, draw your weapon.
  5. Initiate dialogue with the questgiver; before he or she is finished speaking, put away your weapon and begin slamming the action button. Each time you press it, you’ll receive money and experience. This can be repeated as many times as you like.

Dragon Age 2 Item Duplication/Free Gold Code

  1. Move the items you want to duplicate to Junk (Y Button). You can only duplicate only one set of items, any other will simply be sold, so move only one set in this step .
  2. Next, go to a merchant and choose to sell.
  3. Sell the whole stack.
  4. Now go to buy ,and then select buyback. Purchase ALL BUT ONE of the items back.
  5. Go back into the Sell menu and go to the Junk tab.
  6. Select the item stack. Here comes the tricky part… Press Y and A at almost the same time. The item will disappear from your junk list, but a Sell prompt should still appear.
  7. Now go back to Buy/Buyback and you will notice that the quantity of the items the merchant has are doubled. Repeat steps 3-4 as many times as you like for infinite gold and stacks of items up to 999.

Dragon Age 2 Shield Equip Armor Glitch

For warrior class Hawke and Avaline, you can actually boost your armor to 100 percent just by equipping and unequipping a shield. It’s extremely simple, and exploits a bug that doesn’t reduce your armor stat after you unequip a shield, but does raise it when the shield is added.

To use the glitch, just equip a shield, then unequip it, then requip it. Just keep hitting the button until your Armor stat is as high as you want it, all the way up to 100 percent.

Dragon Age 2 Dev Console Cheats

Enabling the Dev Console

Using a Shortcut:

  1. Make a shortcut to your Dragon Age 2 executable file (“DragonAge2.exe”). Put it wherever you’d like.
  2. Click on the shortcut, select “Properties,” then add this attribute -enabledeveloperconsole to the end of the line in the “Target” field.
  3. Ensure that there is a space between the last quotation mark in the shortcut location and the added code.

Editing a Game File

  1. This method, for more advanced users, will enable you to use the game’s normal shortcut, but is slightly more risky. Make sure to make a backup of the file before you edit it.
  2. Find the file “…Dragon Age II/data/DragonAge2Launcher.xml” and open it in a text editor.
  3. Find the line
  4. <condition name=”FirstRunCheck” type=”FileExist” file=”${USERDATA_DIR}SystemInformation.xml”> The line below it should read as follows: <true action=”execute” file=”${BINARIES_DIR}DAOrigins.exe” path=”${BINARIES_DIR}” autoquit=”true” />

  5. At this point, you’ll want to add an attribute: arguments=”-enabledeveloperconsole”
  6. When finished, the line will read
    <<true action=”execute” file=”${BINARIES_DIR}DAOrigins.exe” path=”${BINARIES_DIR}” autoquit=”true” arguments=”-enabledeveloperconsole” />

In Steam (Thanks to user “Mike” for this information!)

  1. Follow the instructions for editing the game XML file, above.
  2. Edit the KeyBindings.ini file (described under “Activating the Dev Console,” below)
  3. Change the line to OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_F12 (or another hot key)
  4. This is strange, but effective — make sure to hit tilde first before hitting the hotkey (or hit the two keys at the same at the same time).

Activating the Dev Console

Once you’ve ensured that the game is loading it up at launch, you’ll need a way to turn the dev console on. This involves modifying the key bindings .ini file, located in C:Users(your name)DocumentsBioWareDragon Age 2SettingsKeyBindings.ini. You’ll need to search this file for the line “OpenConsole_0=”. After the equals sign, type “Keyboard::Button_”, then pick a button you’d like to use. Many people prefer “Tilde,” between Tab and Esc, but the choice is yours. If you’re worried about conflicts, you can use the command “Control+Keyboard:: Button_X” to bind console activation to Ctrl+X.

ONCE ACTIVATED, THERE WILL BE NO INDICATION THAT THE CONSOLE IS WORKING. IT IS INVISIBLE. THE ONLY WAY TO TEST IT IS BY TYPING IN THE COMMANDS BELOW TO SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY EFFECT. EVEN WHILE TYPING THEM, YOU WILL NOT SEE ANY CHANGE ONSCREEN.

Fun Console Commands!

Verified Commands (Confirmed as working in Dragon Age 2)

(A few of these were contributed by commenter “Chrisssssss.” Thanks, Chrisssssss!)

  1. runscript addmoney X – X is tabulated in copper, so keep in mind you’ll need a lot of coppers to get any significant quantity of money.
  2. runscript addxp X – This works not only for your current party, but for you and all your companions.
  3. runscript killallhostiles – Instantly kills all the enemies you’re facing.
  4. runscript healplayer – Heals all your party members instantly.
  5. runscript zz_supercrit player - Boost your stats with +50 Strength and Dexterity, plus 1,000 HP, Stamina and Mana.
  6. runscript zz_supercrit gen00fl_ALLYNAME - Boost the stats of a single character, whose name you input where it says “ally name” in the script above. It’ll give whichever ally you want a stats boost of +50 Strength and Dexterity, plus 1,000 HP, Stamina and Mana.

Unverified Commands (These worked in Dragon Age: Origins, but may not work in Dragon Age 2)

  1. runscript bowlingforferelden – This command surrounds you with a ball of energy and allows you to knock over incoming enemies like bowling pins.
  2. runscript cheater – Unlocks achievements.
  3. runscript pc_immortal – Your health cannot drop below 0.
  4. runscript zz_deathblow – Automatically sends your character into the deathblow animation that corresponds to the weapon you have equipped.

Dragon Age 2 PC Saved Game Editor Cheats

  1. Go grab the file and open it.
  2. From within the saved game editor, find and load the .das file of your game. It’ll be fairly small, around 200KB. Find it here: C:Users[username]DocumentsBioWareDragon Age 2Characters[character name]saves[latest autosave directory]
  3. The editor should show you a screen more or less like this, and you can adjust the numerical values to amp up your various stats.
  4. Use Save As on your game file. You’ll want to save your original in case something get screwed up.
  5. If you’ve got more advanced plans, check out the post on the Bioware forums, as FearCain has some really detailed instructions.
  6. Enjoy totally cheating on Dragon Age 2!

Dragon Age 2 PC Saved Game Generator

Gibbed’s Dragon Age Save Generator allows those of you who don’t have a saved Dragon Age: Origins to create a Dragon Age: Origins save file user-specific plot and character options (and, apparently, does take the DLC into account) for importing to your Dragon Age 2 game. In other words, if you never played DAO or deleted your files, you don’t have to grind through DAO again, or begin Dragon Age 2 with the suckiest possible start point.

Obviously this one’s strictly for the PC gamers in the house, and they can download a copy here.

Jeff Mills

On March 10, 2011 at 6:28 am

@Jeevesd

If you are using a non-steam copy and I gather you have not changed the default installation path (you would know if you did)

*Windows 64bit (Windows XP, Vista or 7 that is 64bit)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Dragon Age 2\bin_ship\DragonAge2.exe

*Windows 32bit
C:\Program Files\Dragon Age 2\bin_ship\DragonAge2.exe

If you are using steam

*C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Dragon Age 2\bin_ship\DragonAge2.exe

Sorry for not giving you more info on previous post.
The URL is for a forum that discusses how to edit save games for DA:2.
Just scroll to where the user named “FearCain” describes how to use the DA:0 save game editor to edit DA:2 saves.
It worked for me, just follow the instructions exactly as they are posted.

There are 2 mistakes at the console´s procedure:

1st – The XML line must read exactly:

2nd – To activate the console by using a command you must edit .ini file as follows:
Ctrl + Keyboard::Button_K

Hey whats up just have a few things to add
I went through the process of enabling the dev console and noticed that in the ini files the ` key was already preset to initiate the ingame console. this is what the text read to enable the key.
OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_Grave
Its a little wierd typing in the script ingame without actually seeing it but it still works none the less.

On March 18, 2011 at 3:46 pm

For the armor glitch listed above, i noticed that you can just keep upgrading their armor, even above 100%, I tried it with Aveline, once you get it up to 100%, then the percentage will stay the same, but if you keep equipping, then unequiping the sheild, her defense stat will still go up! I managed to get her defence stat up to 10,014 im less than 10 minuites!

Open the file “\BioWare\Dragon Age II\Settings\KeyBindings.ini” in your ‘My Documents’ folder. Open the file in Notepad, then find the line that says “OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_X” (GRAVE is default, change X to any button that is not already used in the game). You can also leave it as “Keyboard::Button_GRAVE” and then use the “backtick” character, which is located under the tilde. For Steam it seems binding the console to Tilde doesn’t work for some people. Try binding the console to F6 if all other options failed.

— It seems that, at least in the Direct Download edition from EA, the tilde button is called Kanji. Editing the line to “OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_Kanji” allows one to open the console as normal, using the same button.

Important Note: Every command typed in the console will be invisible, however, you can see if it’s active by typing bound keys (such as trying to move your character or open your inventory), which would normally not work in console mode. The fonts.erf patch from DA:O that was previously used to make the console visible does not appear to work in DA:II.

Once you’ve got everything set, press the assigned key to activate the console and type in the code followed by on your keyboard. The easiest code to check if it’s working is runscript zz_upgrade, as this code will pop open the enchantment screen no matter where you are in the game.

runscript healplayer ~ Gives health to entire party
runscript injury remparty ~ Removes all injuries from party
runscript injury remall ~ removes all injuries from the selected party member
runscript addmoney X ~ Adds copper in the amount of X, i.e.; 10000 = 1 Gold piece
runscript killallhostiles ~ Destroys all enemies. Be careful here because this can break scripted encounters and can potentially block progress.
runscript addxp X ~ Adds experience in the amount of X
runscript pc_immortal ~ You will still lose health, but not die
runscript cheat ~ Temporarily raises party’s defence by a significant value, however, damage is still taken. (needs clarification)
runscript zz_upgrade ~ Opens the enchantment window
runscript zz_app_debug ~ Opens the Approval debug window to set Approval rates and Romance flags (may not work for Sebastian)
runscript zz_supercrit player ~ Adds 1000 Stamina and Health, 50 Dexterity and Strength to Hawke. Note that this effect is irreversible.

This effect is irreversible, but the extra attribute points may be redistributed using the Maker’s Sigh.
To achieve this effect with any companion, prefix the chosen companion’s name with gen00fl_ in place of player. ex: runscript zz_supercrit gen00fl_anders

runscript dbg_setattrib [attrib] [value] ~ Gives you a 180 sec. buff where [attrib] is a number from 1 to 6 (1 being str, 2 dex, etc. in order) and [value] is the amount by which you want the buff to raise it
runscript dbg_setattrib [attrib] [-value] ~ Same as above but subtracts from the Attribute value. (The minus sign needs to be typed in next to the number, ie; -50)
runscript bowlingforferelden – This command surrounds you with a ball of energy and allows you to knock around nearly any NPC (party members included) like bowling pins. Be sure to save before you do this, as the duration is unknown and may be permanent.
runscript zz_party – Resets and adds a couple of the core party members (Aveline, Anders, Isabela). Further testing is required.
runscript zz_lgt_debug – Light Content Debug – Debug for various side quests.
runscript zz_mer_debug – Debug for the Merchant quests
runscript zz_per_debug – Debug for Hawkes personality/dialogue tone. Displays current tone and allows full reset.
runscript chargen warrior XX ~ Changes player to a level XX warrior
runscript chargen mage XX ~ Changes player to a level XX mage
runscript chargen rogue XX ~ Changes player to a level XX rogue

(Beware: Changing your characters class resets your characters appearance to the default.)

runscript zz_dae_debug ~ Modify your party, Act/Area/Plot jumps, and Map debugging

Edit Party ~ you edit your party members and even bring back your long lost sibling. This seems to work so far in Act 1 just make sure you always keep the original survivor in your party so you get the various dialog cues

I have tried everything here and nothing works. I did the shortcut change, changed the command in the launcher XML, tried the inventory editor.
When I prompt the developer console, it does work. Garrett stops moving, but when I enter a command nothing works.

Admiring the dedication you put into your website and detailed information you provide. It’s great to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed material. Great read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.

Hi!
Just wanted to say, that if you have problem with opening consoe, you should try changing key opening it.
I set Tilde, because I’m used to it, but it wouldn’t work, so I read a bit, and there’re some technical issues about the Tilde (seems they are also for ” \ “, because I tried it too), and the best key for console is F6. It actualyly works, Im fckn’ immortal now. ;P

Just wanted to help. :3 Could please someone mention it, above, in the Key bindings part? That should help people. (:

Have fun cheating!

I had trouble with opening the console until I realised that the auto-created shortcut leads to the launcher so I went to the game directory and created a new shortcut to the main game exe added the line opened the game and it worked like a charm.
