Driftopia is a Free-to-Play Ridge Racer Game for PC

Ridge Racer Driftopia is now open for business. Or races, as it were. You can now sign up for the game’s beta by heading over to the official website and registering an account. If you get in, they’ll send you a key to use on Steam to register the game.

Ridge Racer Driftopia is the first ever free-to-play game based on the racing franchise and puts the series’ signature drifting and arcade handling “right at the heart of the experience,” reads the official press release. Developed by Bugbear Entertainment, which made Ridge Racer Unbounded, Driftopia distills the franchise’s experience into the elements of driving, drifting and destruction, with what the studio is calling “upgraded visuals”. Players will be challenged to shave seconds off their lap times and those of their friends as they tear through the streets and punch holes in the environment to reveal shortcuts.

The game comes with global rankings, and allows players to level up cars and earn booster cards to gain an edge over the competition, because the game’s publisher at Namco has to make money off the game somehow.

La sigh

When will companies learn that the best way to do f2p is to not give advantages with money.

Step 1: Make a extremely fun game.
Step 2: Make all items in the store cosmetic.
Step 3: Profit

Valve seems to be the only one that gets it.
