Duke Nukem Teaser Site Becomes “No Gum Needed”
Things have changed over at the Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction teaser site AllOutOfGum.com, where suddenly no gum is needed.
In early February, Interceptor Entertainment launched AllOutOfGum.com, a site that was quickly determined to be a teaser for a new Duke Nukem game entitled Mass Destruction. Described as “a top-down action role-playing game for the PC and PlayStation,” Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction promised an interplanetary ass-kicking expedition with unexpected elements including experience points and tech trees. That may not sound terribly Duke-like, but something a little different was probably in order after the mess that was Duke Nukem Forever. Shortly after the site was unveiled, however, DNF studio Gearbox Entertainment filed a lawsuit against Interceptor and 3D Realms, claiming that it owns the Duke Nukem IP and that Interceptor’s game was unauthorized.
That conflict has yet to be resolved but Interceptor doesn’t appear content to sit idly by while the situation is worked out. Instead, it’s launched a new teaser site at nogumneeded.com, to which alloutofgum.com also now redirects, complete with a new 30-day countdown. The site also sports an image of skull-emblazoned bomb with a lit fuse, and according to Interceptor boss Frederik Schreiber, “There are hints here and there on the site, if you can read between the lines.”
The page source doesn’t reveal anything too screamingly obvious, although I’m not a terribly skilled investigator as these things go. The “All Out of Gum” code remains, albeit it buried and out of site, and the audio file tails off into, “I repeat: This is squadron Bravo two-four-nine, we are under attack, transceiver damaged,” and then some animal-like shrieking and yelling.
I have no idea what it means, although the name of the site certainly suggests that Interceptor is getting ready for life without Duke. The 30-day countdown timer is a lot longer than I’d prefer, but the studio may just need that kind of time to change gears from Mass Destruction to this new project; or it may be that a settlement with Gearbox is in the works and it wants to do the whole “reveal” over again. Whatever’s happening, the truth will be revealed in a month – and maybe we’ll be able to figure it out before then.
