Dust 514 Is Free-To-Play on PS3, But It Does Have a “Cover Charge”

Dust 514 Is looking to be an interesting beast. A free-to-play online shooter for the PS3 that ties directly into EVE Online, the game represents a new frontier for all involved. But is it really free to play?

Technically, yes, but literally no. In order to play the game, you’ll have to buy $10-$20 in in-game currency. Speaking to GI.biz, CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar P├ętursson said: You’re really getting the game for free but you have to pre-buy credits in the beginning. We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it.

I’m probably fine with that. Gotta pay the bills somehow; it’s not like Dust 514 isn’t a pretty massive undertaking on CCP’s part, and so they need to guarantee a cash injection somehow. Hopefully this won’t piss anybody off too much…
