DVD-Enabled Wii Delayed But Still Coming

wii.jpg

A long while back, Nintendo announced that there was going to be a DVD-playing version of the Wii which would release in the future. At the time, they said the latter half of 2007.. and here we are. Nintendo has confirmed that the DVD Wii is still definitely coming, but its release has been pushed back.

This announcement relates to Japan, however; as Chris Kohler pointed out at Game|Life, “In America, you can just make any old announcement you want, never follow up on it, and then, when your customers ask for an explanation, suggest that they are whiny ingrates.”

Nintendo’s statement to Japan is as follows:

Although we had told you that we planned to release the model described above in the latter half of 2007, we will not be able to. We are currently focusing our efforts on manufacturing the current version of the hardware and fulfilling the strong demand in Japan, the US, and Europe.

We apologize deeply for troubling our customers and making you wait. We humbly ask for your understanding.

Why does the Wii need to play DVD’s ? i hate this 50 differnt types of consoles to confuse customers.. Wonder if any of these Hardware Dev’s have any idea how hard it is to explain to a customer what they need on a retail level….

I’m betting the DVD enabled one will simply replace what there is. I have no problems with not having it, to be honest. In terms of DVD players I own, I have my PC, my PS2 and my 360…I’d like my Wii to have a harddrive, but other than that, doesn’t really need a DVD.

Blah, also, sorry for double post, but in terms of this year for gaming, 2007 won’t be remembered for Halo 3 (it will, but it won’t be, “OMG, HALO 3 WAS ALL THERE WAS TO 2007″). Other than it maybe being year of the FPS, I think it’d be more practical to say year of the delay. Ir should that be, “2007, delayed to 2008″?

God why do we need ours consoles to everything? I think by this point in time everyone already has a dvd player and then some. I have 1 dvd-rom drive, 1 dvd-r drive, and 2 dvd players one of which is a very early model and the other cost me 20$.
