DX10 Graphics Mod Improves Aliens: Colonial Marines, Somewhat

It’s been almost a week since the release of Aliens: Colonial Marines, and if anything is certain about the game, it’s that there’s not much players can do to improve their experience given what the game is, and how it plays. That is to say, the game’s just not very good.

That being said, it’s entirely possible to make the game look better than it does out of the box. Through the use of a player-made mod, players can use DirectX 10 features to improve the game’s bland visuals and make it look at least a fraction as good as the game’s previews. Developed by THX555 on moddb, the “AliensDX10 Better Grafik and Light” mod purports to implement the following improvements to the game:

DirectX 10 enabled
MSAA enabled
DX10 lightning improvements
Real-time lighting
Better reflections
Realistic muzzle flash
Fewer problems with nVidia stereoscopic 3D
Improved memory usage for graphical textures, shadows, and lighting
Improved load times
Better bloom
Active aim assist for controllers

Given the amount of fixes that went into this mod, which was created by an amateur programmer with a few hours on his hands, it’s surprising how Gearbox never thought to implement any of these improvements on their own prior to releasing the game.

A trailer of the mod in action can be seen below.

Things like this shouldn’t need to be done by an amateur programmer. The game developer is just lazy and should have done this to begin with. Especially if it didn’t require alot of time to fix.
