E3 2008: More Spore Ceatures than Species on Earth
Spore creator Will Wright announced during yesterday’s EA press conference that Spore Creature Creator now has more species in the game than the number of species on Earth. That is quite a feat, although I have to say that I have met many people in my life who would be considered something more of a sub-species of Homo sapiens which would give us quite a larger number of species on Earth than originally thought, but I digress.
Wright stated that Maxis was blown away by the amount of creativity, and that their expectations were only realistically hoping for around 100,000 creations by the time the game launched, and expected one million to have been created by 2009. As we reported before, over 100,000 creatures were created within the first 22 hours, and by the end of the week, one million were gracing the Sporepedia.
Wright went on to say that in the 18 days since it was released, Spore: Creature Creator has had over 1,756,869 creatures created by gamers, and according to a nice Wikipedia search, Earth has only 1.6 million species, with the number of undiscovered ones growing by the day. Maybe some of our brethren I mentioned above will get “discovered” by a scientist and bring that number up a bit more, but again, I digress.
In a really neat twist of events, it was also mentioned yesterday that a National Geographic TV documentary will be aired at the same time as the game’s release through a partnership with SETI. Which if you are an believer in aliens or watched the X-Files on a regular basis, you would know that they specialize in the search for extraterrestrial life. As a matter of fact my older brother is a member of SETI, but I really won’t much further into those details, no matter how much liquor you pour down my throat.
The screens posted below are new and just released at E3 yesterday. More are after the jump. Enjoy.
