E3 2011: Mass Effect 3 to Support Kinect

Onstage at the Microsoft E3 conference, Bioware has just confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will support Kinect for voice commands.

Not only will you be able to select dialog options using your voice, you’ll also be able to issue commands in combat with your voice. The demo showed off ordering squad members to move and use special attacks through voice commands.

Honestly, the Kinect integration in ME3 looks forced. It’s in there, and it seems to work OK, but do we really need to be saying dialog options out loud, so we can hear the characters onscreen say them again? Did anyone really have issues with controlling your squad in combat?

Microsoft, Kinect can be cool, but you don’t need to implement it in every game.

Honestly, the title almost made me nerd rage. But when I saw it was for voice command only, it made me think about how this could be helpful.

“Do we really need to be saying dialog options out loud, so we can hear the characters onscreen say them again?” No that’s dumb indeed.

“Did anyone really have issues with controlling your squad in combat?”: No, but if the voice command can make the gameplay more smooth, why not?

There were 2 types of pauses in Mass Effect. 1- Give me a second to analyze the fight pause.
2- Let me tell the Krogan to use the charge and tell the Asari to lift the guy.

Try to be fancy with the skills combination in every single fight. Pausing is tedious indeed. If you implement the voice command correctly, you can save your hands extra commands. Fights will be more dynamic and fluids.

This is a great Kinect integration if it is done correctly. Not some s–ty gimmicky “wave your harms around” to look dumb while saving the universe kind of integration….

unless you can slap that Krogan’s ass in the sex scene. :o

My guess is that this is little more than Microsoft filling in a check box next to “More core games for Kinect”. Bioware knows why people like Mass Effect, interesting characters, good story, and an awesome universe. Actual gameplay mechanics need only be good enough not to make you throw at the screen, which is most likely what i think Kinect will do. Either way, i’m gettin’ the PC version.
