L4D Dev Hilariously Nails The Dif B/T Console And PC Gamers

PC Games N managed to score a pretty great interview with Left 4 Dead developer Chet Faliszek last week at E3. The best part of their little chat? His perfect explanation of the difference between PC and console gamers. In most situations, PC gamers and console gamers tend to make the same choices. However, when it comes to weapons, they tend to line up in almost cliched camps;

“Experience wise, mutation wise, what they wanted to play was the same across all platforms,” Faliszek said. “But if they had to choose between a sniper rifle and a chainsaw, the PC players would choose a sniper rifle and the 360 players would choose a chainsaw.”

Before we get too persnickety or gloaty, depending, the choice has to do with interface. PC controllers are a hell of a lot more precise, making ranged weapons better for mowing down zombies. Console controls are bit clunkier, favoring melee attacks over guns. A Chainsaw overcomes the lack of precision while delivering carnage handily, hence the difference.

Generally speaking, I always thought of it as a spectrum of convenience vs. control. With consoles, you use it the way the manufacturers intended, using their approved devices which should have a high rate of compatibility; however you are limited to the specs of the console in performance and features.
With PCs (Windows) there is a huge range of options that you can customize to your liking but you may have to research what software/hardware you want to use if you aren’t familiar (experience with PCs helps a lot when configuring), and pay extra for a certain setup (e.g. eyefinity/surround, enthusiast controllers/inputs).

I remember reading something similar a long time ago: when paired against equally skilled players, gamers on the PC obliterated console users in FPS games… because of diff in control/precision.

Is this variable something controlled for in online games?

Other than the development hardships, that’s why cross-platform shooters will never work. Much easier to aim with a mouse.
