EA CTO: XB1/PS4 ‘Generation Ahead of PC,’ Mark Rein Calls ‘Bullshit’

Earlier today, EA CTO Rajat Taneja took to his LinkedIn page to wax poetic about console hardware (Develop Online reported on the post here). It’s an exciting time for consoles, naturally, as new hardware from Sony and Microsoft is right around the corner.

“Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have adopted electronics and [SoC] architecture that unleashes magnitudes more compute and graphics power than the current generation of consoles,” says Rajat, and he’s right! The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One truly are several orders of magnitude more powerful than the consoles they’ll be replacing…but Rajat took that sentiment a step further.

“These architectures are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market and their unique design of the hardware, the underlying operating system and the live service layer create one of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics.”

Now before everyone goes off all half-cocked, let’s put the word “generation” in the proper context. The PS4 and One are both based on AMD hardware that either just launched, or hasn’t appeared, in the consumer PC space yet. Specifics are hard to come by, but both consoles are using CPUs with Jaguar cores, an architecture that just launched in the PC space this week. And those Jaguar cores are only found in low-power mobile APU chips right now, so we aren’t talking about serious gaming PC hardware just yet.

Shifting to GPUs, the new consoles have to be using hardware based on the upcoming high-end Radeon 8000 series — Sony said as much a few months ago. The 8000 series shares some traits with the high-end 7000 series SKUs, like GCN 2.0, but it’s the next generation of GPU tech from AMD, plain and simple. Are there a few 8000 series mobile GPU parts floating around? Yes, but they’re a far cry from what the presumed desktop 8970 video card will offer performance-wise — laptop components always are when compared to their desktop counterparts.

Saying that these new consoles are ahead of gaming PCs isn’t much of a stretch, although Rajat’s next point definitely is. “Our benchmarks on just the video and audio performance are 8-10 times superior to the current gen.”

I can’t believe that, and I’m definitely not the only one.

“No they’re not. I call bullshit on this one,” said Epic Games VP Mark Rein. And who would know better than one of the people responsible for bringing Unreal Engine 4 to the next wave of gaming platforms? While Rajat’s use of the word “generation” is in murky waters, I’ll give him a pass. But to say that these consoles are eight to ten times more powerful than a high-end gaming PC? That’s a harder pill to swallow.

Let’s look to the Call of Duty: Ghosts presentation during the Xbox One reveal. Some netizen was kind enough to compare the faces in each game/demo — which looks better to you? Does the COD head look like something powered by a console that’s “8-10 times superior” to current PCs?

Now let’s look at some jungle footage, again from some masked hero at Imgur. I think the jungle foliage in Ghosts looks fantastic, but how does it compare to foliage from Crysis 1? Does it look exponentially better?

Honestly, I think this is an executive that’s excited about the future of games. Who isn’t right now? There are two new consoles coming later this year, the GTX 780 just launched, and new hardware from Intel and AMD is right around the corner. When was the last time we saw new hardware on all fronts like this? Regardless of your platform of choice, it’s an exciting time for graphics and performance junkies. Pretty soon, the virtual jungle will look so real, you’ll never be able to find your way out.

Let’s revisit Mr. Taneja’s idiotic statement after the consoles are released and PC crushes consoles in comparison benchmarks.

I’m tired as Bantha poodoo with all this EA crap. I can’t wait until they go under to open my 30 year scotch I have saved just for the occasion.

There are so many of these moronic comments from people in the gaming industry that by all reasonable assumption would know what they’re talking about.. I mean a GTX 780/Titan is something like 3 times as powerful as the new consoles just by numbers… So where do these morons get off passing along these obviously erroneous statements?

I’m beginning to think it’s done purposely just to rile up the crowd and get attention. Because nobody who knows anything about high-end PC hardware would say this.

@Michael
You might have to wait awhile, but i hear scotch gets better with age.

Come on people. What the heck did you expect. He’s from EA. When was the last time you heard the truth come out of someone from EA? Quite a few years I’d say.
EA makes most of it’s money from consoles, so of course he’s going to try and drum up business, no matter how stupid he sounds. He’s from EA for gosh sakes. Of course he’s stupid.

I’m a console gamer trough and trough.
I will never be comfortable gaming on PC.
Now, even I call BS on that one. That guy is lying or is simply deluded.

Wasn’t just 2 weeks ago they were saying that the PS4 (at least) was comparable to a low end PC? Now they’re saying its better than a high end PC?

As for the comparison pictures, is it just me or does the Crysis 3 side still look better than the CoD side?

Quite right TheDog.

Quite simply consoles could never catch up to PC, soon as a console is released the hardware is already dated by PC standards.

I’ve always been a console gamer, I rarely play PC games, but this is pure drivel. Consoles are by their very nature doomed to always be several steps behind PC’s technology. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but blatantly lying or deluding yourself and a section of your consumer base is.

Even if the consoles were more powerful than PCs, it would only be a matter of time before that was no longer the case. It happens every generation, where PCs catch up and eventually surpass consoles, so I see no point in EA saying something like this, even if it were true.

Ok are the new consoles leaps and bounds better than the ones they replace. Yes. With current specs it will be much easier to make games across the XBox. PS4 and PC

Are they going to be better than a high end PC. Dear god put the crack pipe down and back away slowly.

As for pics above. Crysis looks far better over Ghosts.

It looks better, yes, but not exponentially.

So there comparing the jungles of Call of Duty Ghosts, to the jungles in the original crysis. you want to know what the sad part is, the crysis jungles still look better and the game is also going on 5 years old.

I was lookin for the article like this for 1 year. I tried to explain people but they didn’t. Consoles like ps3 and xbox can never reach to the level of PC. is itself new generation always. Consoles can never touch th PCs whether in graphics or performance.
We have the example of Max Payne 3… PS3 3 and XBOX 360 doesn’t provide such good graphics as compared to PC. Max Payne 3 runs very smoothly in all PCs and gives you better texture, performence, realism and graphics…
Overall PC must not be neglected.. as Rockstar is doing the same nowdays.

@Derek Yeah, let’s revisit it when PC gamers are crying “they gave us a console port. wah wah wah.” making excuse, etc.

“waaahhhhh EA says PCs aren’t as good as consoles, I’m going to assume he’s wrong because I don’t like EA wahhhhh Shepherd couldn’t be saved bawwwwbawwbawwwwww”

lol. I think this guy knows what he’s talking about more than a bunch of virgin 35 year old nerds who clean toilets at Burger King for minumum and still think Eve Online is better than WOW. Have fun living in 1993, homos.

Isn’t the “next-gen” PS4 hardware equivalent already available on the PC hardware market? The Xbox one uses a GPU that’s very close to the Radeon HD 7790 and PS4 uses a card on par with a Radeon 7870. Both these cards will be out done by this time next year, so to say these consoles are a generation ahead when they are using current generation PC hardware seems idiotic at best.

@lol
I have a pretty good feeling you speak with personal experience, on what you describe. Except I’m also fairly certain burger king wouldn’t even want you with the attitude you display.

This has less to do with reality and more to do with publisher’s vested interest in promoting consoles over pc’s. Console piracy is less of a thing than pc, so it a warped way it makes sense for ea and it’s ilk to jump at every chance they can to declare the death of pc gaming. They can’t just come out and say “if we release it on pc you’ll just steal it so no game for you”, but they can make excuses about pc’s not being up to par with consoles.

Oh for God sake! Stop comparing the launch titles with one of the best game that ever came, why are PC gamers so insecure about things? Always creating a fuss. Yea, PCs are more powerful because they can be upgraded, but stop comparing “CRYSIS” with “Call of duty”, that game has had the same graphics since the first COD: MW came out.
