EA Executive Calls Modern Warfare Franchise “Damaged”
Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’ve no doubt heard all about the drama at Infinity Ward. On the off chance that you haven’t, here’s a quick summary: Two of the studio’s founders were dismissed, sued Activision, Activision sued back, and now those two founders, Vince Zampella and Jason West, have formed Respawn Entertainment. Several Infinity Ward team members left Activision, and consequently joined Respawn.
The legal battles aside, the announcement that sparked a ton of discussion was Respawn signing with EA. Since then the sniping has been flying back and forth, with EA denigrating the way Activision has handled the situation, and Activision claiming that Infinity Ward is in fine shape, regardless of the departures.
David DeMartini, General Manager of EA Partners, has stirred the pot a little more, calling the Modern Warfare “damaged – maybe never to be the same again,” in an interview with CVG.
It’s no surprise that EA is operating in full-on gloat mode, especially with the revelation by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick last week that 35 people have left Infinity Ward, and a few more will likely still depart. Anyone want to lay odds on what percentage of those folks are landing at Respawn?
When asked how this situation might have unfolded if Infinity Ward was a part of EA, Demartini replied, “It’s kind of hard to answer that question because Infinity Ward was an internal studio of Activision…But what I’d say is you haven’t seen any internal studios up and leave EA. If Infinity Ward was an internal studio at EA would things have been different? I think yes – but I’m biased.”
Personally, I’m getting a little sick of the whole thing. Is it a big deal? Well, yes. At least it was. Now, it’s degenerating into name-calling and PR wars. Let’s wait and see what the answers to the two big questions are:
- Will Respawn’s first effort be successful?
- Will Modern Warfare (or Call of Duty in general) survive this?
Think you can answer those two questions? Have a go in the comments!
