EA Release 15 Minutes Of Dead Space 3 Gameplay Footage.

We didn’t come away from E3 particularly impressed by Dead Space 3. Bigger, faster, dumber, it seemed based on the E3 demo that it’s a drastic departure from ever series convention that matters, ultimately being nothing more than Dead Space in name only.

That’s an opinion shared by a lot of observers who, like us, feel that EA is just doing what they do best, which is to royally screw up games that work and to make them as generic as possible. The negative buzz was strong enough that EA felt compelled to respond by insisting that they’re listening to the fans, and that Dead Space 3 is definitely a horror game because something something*. I don’t buy it either, but you have to give them credit for trying, or appearing to anyway.

And now they’re rolling out phase 2 of Operation Convince People Dead Space 3 Won’t Suck: a 15 minute gameplay hosted by producer Steve Papoutsis. Here it is in full:

This is, incidentally, almost entirely comprised of the same footage I saw at E3, only slightly improved. I admit that the graphics are a bit more impressive, particularly the physics of fire being blown by wind, but it still looks like Dead Space 3 is Lost Planet + Gears of War, except worse because as you’ll see, they’re nerfing out single player narrative content to force players to play co-op. I’m trying to keep an open mind but it’s just looking inevitable that DS3 is going to be bad.

But what do you think? Sound off in comments.

* I’m still confused by the fact that EA apparently believes a game isn’t a success unless it moves 5 million copies, and that their plan to accomplish this goal with Dead Space 3 is to alienate core fans of the series. But then, I can’t believe they’re releasing a SimCity game that has no single player capability, so I’m probably a little dumb.

Why don’t they just rename the game “Gears of Lost Planet” and get it over with?

If there is one thing Capcom taught us, its Co-Op + Horror are two words that can not, do not and will not EVER go together in the same sentence.

What EA needs to do is stop listening to their die-hard Battlefield fans that mindlessly go “YEAH MULTIPLAYER. MULTIPLAYER IN EVERY GAME!!!11 No MP = No buy”. So in one hand they are listening to the fans, but on the other, theyre listening to the wrong fans.

It’s almost like they didn’t learn their lesson from TOR. Those who want to play WoW are going to play WoW which has been stable and around for 8 years, not WoW released in 2012 under a different name.

Likewise, the same lesson they needed to learn from ME3. Those who want to play dudebro shooters are going to play Gears of War, the king of the dudebro market. Not every shooter needs to be dudebro.

@Axetwin Well… coop+horror works, take a look at Obscure 1, that’s for having bad teachers.

Now the thing is, I’ll say it again, Dead Space shouldn’t have ever followed Isaac’s and Necro’s storyline from the second. A completely new story would’ve been great, and then we wouldn’t know what to expect for any of the sequels not beign just a trilogy. I mean it’s called Dead Space, it could be anything. But, so much for expectations now..

Hey, name me survival-horrors for PS3 besides Dead Space and Resident Evil… ah?

@Tiagonal I kind of disagree with your thoughts on DS2. In pre-release there was alot of speculation that the story was going to focus on not only Issac dealing with Nicole’s fate but also with the events that happened on the Isimura/Aegis IV. Which I know is what they did in DS2, HOWEVER, chunks of the game were going to take place inside Issac’s head as his sanity was cracked by the events on Aegis IV. As the game went on it would become harder and harder for him to distinguish reality from his dreams. Personally, I thought this sounded awesome, almost like a sci-fi Silent Hill.

So you see the problem wasnt the character, it was with the story they gave him. If you really think about it, they didnt do anything with him storywise. He had no additional character development, no growth, no real story arc as a character. They only thing they established was a ship engineer can suffer a psychotic break that last 4 years and then wake up as more of a badass than he was 4 years prior. Me thinks he got the same mental conditioning as Simon Phoenix.

As for non-RE/DS survival horror games, the game Amy is technically a survival horror. Though I suspect you might have more fun sawing off your own feet and seeing how far you can sprint to the hospital on your hands before you pass out from blood loss. That is however, just one person’s opinion.

@Axetwin Indeed, you’re proving my point on Dead Space 2, pre-release a lot of expectations arose from the first one, and most of them followed its character and story. The thing is space is so much larger to just hold the same horrors sequel after sequel, and beign expectations the franchises killers, Dead Space could’ve just avoided some without loosing its core.

Hey, thanks for the advice on Amy, I’ll surely avoid it based on your opinion.
