EA Slaps Mass Effect 3 Codex into a Free iOS App

The second of Electronic Arts’ two Mass Effect 3 tie-in iOS apps has hit Apple’s iTunes App Store, and this one is deliciously free.

The Mass Effect 3 Datapad is basically the game’s complete Codex, transplanted into an app, as well as a Galaxy at War thing that can almost be described as a game, which you can use to boost your War Readiness rating in Mass Effect 3. The game plays like something you’d see on Facebook — you assign “fleets” to complete missions, which take a set amount of time. When they’re done, you receive an increase in Readiness, as well as some credits you can apply toward upgrading your ships so they finish their missions faster.

Also included in the app are a few exclusive bits of trans-media. Images and videos are included in the app from the game, as well as a neat feature in which characters from the game send you text messages at different points in the plot. These are custom-tailored to your experience — I received messages from Tali about how in love we are, and I’ve seen other players receive similar ones from Garrus, etc.

The app links to your Origin account, so you’ll need one for it to go fully functional, but it doesn’t cost anything. Your only warning: try not to get lost down the rabbit hole listening to and reading the Codex.

Download the app for iPhone and iPad here.
