EA Sports Shoots NHL Slapshot to Nintendo Wii in September
It’s not every day you get to file a report on “accidents waiting to happen”, but EA’s announcement that it’s bringing a Wii version of NHL Hockey to the Wii (isn’t that Wii-tastic?) this September should also reintroduce one of the things that makes the sport great – beating opponents with your spongy hockey stick when they pull a cheap shoulder throw and score on you.
While the game itself is continuing the “downplay” of the main EA Sports titles for a more approachable, “fun” audience – the coolest happy accident is the inclusion of the Wii hockey stick controller. The plastic and foam imitation bludgeon holds the Nintendo Wii and nunchuck controllers and looks to be a big experiment on EA’s part to try and make the game more realistic in its play controls. Rumors are this is also a test case for adapting the main games to the upcoming motion controller technologies on the 360 and PS3.
Despite the spongy tip I’m betting it won’t be two weeks after release that the first videos of Wii Hockey assaults and broken LCD TVs hit the mainstream news media. Even Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky is looking kinda leery in that publicity picture, or is he just realizing how potentially “enriching” this will be for the kids?
