Early Gears of War 3 Build Leaked to the Internet
An unfinished, early build of Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 has leaked to the Internet, filling YouTube with videos from the entire single player campaign and much of the multiplayer.
The leaked game is showing up on torrent sites and if you’re looking for some evidence, you can hit YouTube here and see a little Horde mode (there are a lot of other videos that will show more in the way of campaign, so SPOILERS abound).
Don’t expect to torrent down the game and dump it onto your Xbox 360 immediately, though; the game is a JTAG version, so you’ll need a modded debug Xbox used by developers and sometimes at PR events. They’re notoriously difficult to track down — some press have them in order to play games early for reviews, but even then, you really really gotta know people.
Epic confirmed the leak and also said that while there’s a lot of content out there on the Intertubes, it’s not final game content. The developer told GameSpot, “We have seen the reports of Gears of War 3 content being propped on the web and [we are] working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation. This content is not from a final build and is not representative of what fans will enjoy when the game launches worldwide on September 20, 2011.”
But if you tool around YouTube a bit, it appears the leaked build isn’t too far off the mark. At least the multiplayer content seems in line with what we’ve seen at E3 and during the Gears of War 3 beta.
There are still two months between now and the release of Gears 3, and Epic has said it has already fielded 1 million preorders for the title, the speed at which they were logged beating out both Halo 3 and Halo: Reach. The multiplayer beta last month logged in 1.29 million players from 145 countries
