EA’s MOBA, Dawngate, Now Open to All

The Dawngate has opened.

Officially, EA’s MOBA is in “community beta,” and anyone can head on over to the official Dawngate website, register and download.

I had a chance to play Dawngate while it was still in closed beta, and it actually does add something new to the classic Dota/League of Legends formula.

First and foremost is the Dawngate map. There are only two lanes and the jungle is huge. The objective is the same — push through towers and destroy the enemy base generator thingy — but the two lanes and typical double junglers leads to much more action.

EA says players are not limited in play style by the characters they choose thanks to an open system that allows us to tailor our characters on the fly. I haven’t had enough experience with the system yet to provide any real insight, but it seems waaay too early for EA to say “break the meta” when Dawngate hasn’t established one yet.

Some interesting tweaks to the MOBA formula, but EA is fighting an uphill battle against the established juggernauts and some promising newcomers, including Infinite Crisis, Heroes of the Storm, and Smite. Anywho, you can sample them for yourself. The Dawngate is open.
