Eidos CEO: PS3 is Worthy of the Price
Eidos US CEO Bill Gardner says that the PlayStation 3 is appropriately priced, but admits that it will take more than the $100 price drop to sell it to the mass market.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz Gardner said, “I don’t think [the price cut] is enough to reach the mass consumer, but I think it is enough to get it moving again, and it will move a little bit further, and they’ll need to do it again and it will move a bit further.”
Even so Gardner believes that the PS3 as a console with Blu-ray player is a good buy.
“Go buy an HD or a Blu-ray player. Go ahead. Tell me what it costs you. Then take a look at the PS3,” he said.
“I don’t think [PS3 is too expensive. I do think we’ll start to see additional people pick it up and use it, maybe not necessarily exclusively as a game player but as a Blu-ray player and a game player, and there is an advantage to that.”
Seeing the other options for Blu-ray players out there, I tend to agree. If the retailers eventually choose Blu-ray over HD DVD format, Sony stands to make a come back in a big way. That will be especially true if the PS3 can also be used as a DVR. Do I think they are over priced… no, but I do think they are too expensive for the demographics interested in the console – gamers.
