Elder Scrolls Online: How to Become a Vampire

Vampires return in The Elder Scrolls Online, and contracting the dreaded disease will start up a quest line leading you down the path to darkness. Just like becoming a vampire in Skyrim, there are advantages and disadvantages to the change.

Like joining a guild, contracting vampirism unlocks a new set of active/passive skills to unlock. As time passes, the stages of vampirism increase, adding further buffs or debuffs to your character. To bring the illness back under control, you’ll need to feed on the living. There’s way more to being a vampire, so check out the info below.

How to Become a Vampire

NOTE: There are many advantages and disadvantages to becoming a vampire in ESO. Check out the info below, and drop a comment if there’s something you think we should add.

Getting the Disease

Warning: Werewolves or those currently infected with the disease cannot contract vampirism.

Method #1: Infection Sites

Vampires can be found in all advanced-level zones of Tamriel. Look for special sites (similar to dungeon or battle zone markers) with a crescent moon symbol. Vampires congregate in these locations.

If you’re bitten and contract vampirism, a new quest called “Scion of the Blood Matron” will drop into your journal. Complete it to either become a vampire, or cure yourself of the disease.

Method #2: Other Players

Other players can bite and infect you with vampirism. This takes place at the Vampire ritual site. There is a 7-day cooldown timer between each bite.

Advantages & Disadvantages

As a vampire, you’ll gain a new skill line in the World Skills submenu, and your avatar will experience four stages of vampiric effects that add particular buffs or debuffs over a period of time.

  • Stage 1 (30 min): +50% Fire Damage Weakness
  • Stage 2 (60 min): -25% Health Regeneration, +50% Fire Damage Weakness, -20% Health Cost to Vampirism Skills
  • Stage 3 (90 min): -50% Health Regeneration, +50% Fire Damage Weakness, -40% Health Cost to Vampirism Skills
  • Stage 4 (90+ min): -75% Health Regeneration, +50% Fire Damage Weakness, -60% Health Cost to Vampirism Skills

Vampires always suffer weakness to fire, and their special vampire skills cost health to cast instead of magicka.

To lower stages of vampirism, the player must feed on human opponents. Using invisibility (Nightblade Skill) or unlocking Dark Stalker makes this much easier. Otherwise, simply crouch and approach a human enemy (PVE) to gain the option to feed.

Awesome thanks for the info. I didn’t know about the vampire sites (moon markers). Anyway to list what zones might have these?

@Kyle D:

I’ll keep a lookout for lists of zones — right now, I believe they can be found in The Rift or any of the other level 40-50 zones. They won’t appear until later in the game, for sure.

am I understanding this correctly? The higher stage vampirism regenerates health slower and slower?
