Electronic Arts and Hasbro have entered into a licensing agreement to create electronic versions of Hasbro’s games, which include Monopoly, Scrabble and Yahtzee. Electronic Arts will hold worldwide rights to create digital games for electronic devices including mobile telephones and over the Internet through 2013. The games are slated to start launching in 2008.
“Our toy and game brands have been family-favorites for decades, and aligning ourselves with EA will result in broadening the reach of our brands,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief operating officer.
This news coupled with EA recently purchasing more stock in Ubisoft, which gives them 25% of Ubisoft’s voting shares, only proves once again that Electronic Arts wants to rule the gaming world with an iron fist. Pardon me if I sound invidious, but EA is the Bill Gates of the gaming industry. Kill the little guy, buy the little guy, or horn in on the competition. Either way, they usually produce sub par games with overused ideas and their only concern is the bottom line instead of quality.
