Epic Says SOPA Sucks

Despite being a member of the Electronic Software Association, which supports SOPA, Epic Games is coming out and saying that the Stop Online Piracy Act is not a good thing.

“We do not support the current version of SOPA,” said Epic Games senior PR manager Dana Cowley on the Epic forums. “We are members of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a trade organization that is working with legislators to refine the bill.”

Well, that’s optimistic. She continued:

Epic Games supports efforts that would stop overseas websites profiting from pirating our games, but we have to do that in a way that’s compatible with freedom of speech and due process of law.

Well, it’s good to see an ESA member speak out against the bill. They were just the first of a couple, though, as 38 Studios and Trion Worlds have also had some strong words about it. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a trend.

It doesn’t matter what they say, it matters what they do and currently they’re part a group supporting SOPA.

Not hard to see how a company would would to distance itself from SOPA looking at how some have suffered for it, this just looks like they’re trying to avoid the hatred while still supporting it.

If they want to stop supporting it, either leave the group supporting SOPA or get the group to change to oppose SOPA.

Put your money where your mouth is Epic, it’s a binary choice and that’s all there is to it.

Yeah as long as they are part of the ESA they are just hypocrites and their statement has no value.
