Epic Will Never Make a Game for the Wii

epic_logoe3_small.jpgAre you holding out for a Wii version of Gears of War, complete with chainsaw motion controls? Well, I wouldn’t hold your breath. According to Epic Games’ president, Mike Capps, the developer will never make a game for the Wii. When asked about it, Capps stated, “No, we go forward, not back. It makes more sense for us to invest in the next-generation tech.” He then went on to discuss why he thinks the Nintendo’s machine has been so popular:

It’s a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they’re like, “Oh my God that’s so cool, I’m gonna go buy it.” So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they’ve showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there’s a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I’m still waiting for that one game that makes me play it.

Wow, it’s like he was specifically talking about me and my Wii-owning friends. Mine’s been collecting dust for awhile now, in fact. So I guess you can take this news for what it is though. In the debate of whether graphics truly represent the next-generation of gaming, Epic would apparently argue that they do.

“No, we go forward, not back. ”

Um, Unreal Tournament number 47 would like a word with you.

When they make a game that isn’t full of overdeveloped grunting space marines shooting each other, wake me up.

The only reason I’m playing my Wii is GH3

But after I fix my TV and get brawl, we’ll see what starts collecting dust.

Wow. What a douchebag. Screw getting GoW2.

On April 21, 2008 at 12:22 am

Seeing things like this make me happy that I’ve held off on getting a wii. I’ve played it at parties, but I really dont see it becoming a home entertainment staple like the 360 has become.

That said, if anyone wants to unload one dirt cheap let me know… The girlfriend would love me for at least 2 hours before the novelty wore off ;)

On April 21, 2008 at 12:27 am

Epic fails again with yet another stupid comment.
I can’t wait to see them get erased from the gaming history forever.

On April 21, 2008 at 12:29 am

Ahaha, yes, the makers of Unreal and Gears of War are going to be erased. Hahaha…yes, indeed. Wii owning sucker. (Or PS3 got, whichever ;)

On April 21, 2008 at 12:36 am

I don’t own a Wii at all but everything Epic says pisses me off. Oh and nice homophobic comments there to the guy above me.

On April 21, 2008 at 12:39 am

I’m not terribly surprised. I really wanted to see the Wii do well, since it might have otherwise had an impact on gaming in the future. But Nintendo just shoveled out the same junk they always do and 3rd party games are just a huge collection of gimmicks. The only game I’ve liked on the Wii so far was Brawl, and that neither uses the motion controls nor is compelling enough by itself to make me shell out $200 for what is otherwise a brick.

Looks like Epic’s still bitter about the colossal disaster known as Unreal Tournament 3. Doesn’t even show up on Gamespy Stats’ Top 40 games played online.

Forget Wii, 360 and PS3……
PC rules

On April 21, 2008 at 2:38 am

PC for the win. Until they make games on consoles that are unique, PC wins. And Epic could’ve easily of said “With our current ideas and uses of technology, the Wii doesn’t support the power we need.”

On April 21, 2008 at 2:39 am

Yea, I agree with Mike Capps.
How long you can shake your hands in funny way to play games? Wii is only for parties or “because I’m really bored and I payed for Wii”.

Edub said “Looks like Epic’s still bitter about the colossal disaster known as Unreal Tournament 3. Doesn’t even show up on Gamespy Stats’ Top 40 games played online.”

I think you may be on to something there man. They didnt start pissing and moaning about the PC and Wii till AFTER UT3 bombed.

On April 21, 2008 at 4:04 am

 You know epic could have said it a bit more tactfully, but it really is true. Our Wii only really gets used at parties and to engage non-gamers in gaming when the need arises. The new smash bro’s is cool, but even the kids chose not to buy it after we rented it. We have all the consoles and a couple fairly high end gaming PCs, right now the PS3 gets the most play and the 360 gets almost constant use with Halo3 online.

I do have to say that out of all the games we play that it is still fun to whip out Wii Sports every now and again! However it played out almost verbatim to what Mike said, a novel couple months then nothing for a long while.

As a side note, it never ceases to amaze me how childish some of the people who post on these sites can be! Fanboys of various flavors making ignorant comments about owners of electronic entertainment devices that they personally don’t favor. Guys, we are all GAMERS! Why are you so afraid of people who own differing electronics to play GAMES? Don’t say, ‘Oh I’m not afraid!’ because you are or you wouldn’t be attacking without provocation! Try to remember they are people who love games too, maybe even the same ones you do?

Please take this in the spirit in which it was intended…

wtf what a tool. Just because Nintendo doesn’t JUST upgrade, it adds new features but you’re true PC does rule. But Wii isn’t bad or Prev. Gen., it’s new gen, with new feature and games, instead of same games with better graphics.

On April 21, 2008 at 6:12 am

I play Lego Star Wars, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, SSBB, and soon Lego indiana Jones on my Wii. It gets plenty of play. I think some gamers only want to roll around shooting in high tech FPS. Ok great. I could do that on my PC. I don’t play sports games either so… yeah the 360 blows. Halo 1 was great the rest blew. PS3 doesn’t have enough life to be fun yet, a year from now maybe. FF13 might cause me to buy one. For now though Wii is great, and sells a ton, so grow up epic. Your days are numbered!!!! Maybe. Well see.

A couple of comments from me. I have a friend that has a wii. He has had it for a while and for a long time he did have it sit and do nothing. But the release of great Nintendo produced games has been enough to mend the gaps. When Brawl came out we have been playing every Friday night at an old building on a projector and sweet surround sound. It’s a lot of fun and I just don’t get that kind of fun from other games. It’s light hearted.

Second point. I play a lot of FPS… on the PC. Consoles suck for FPS. It’s a shame that Live costs to play against people on consoles. But no PC player is going to subscribe to play against an opponent that he knows he going to slay them every time. That would get old fast. Now even playing something like COD4 online is fun, but I don’t enjoy it like I do playing something like SSBB.

Here’s an example of tricking the public also about PC games and console games. I just recently got a copy of Assassins Creed. So many people talked crap about this game but I bet 90% of you didn’t play it. You just talked about it. Well I have it for PC and the game is awesome and it looks much better on PC than it does on a “next gen” console. People think that if the game is on a PC you have to use the keyboard and mouse. Wake up people, were in the future now. Buy a damn controller for you PC… Duh.

As for Epic. I feel sorry for the company and the image that they have to take because of this jack ass. It’s not Nintendo’s fault that there are not a lot of games for it. It’s up to 3rd party developers to get on the damn ball and think of something new. These developers today like Epic play it safe and do what they know. That’s all. It’s a shame that UT3 tanked but that’s what you get when you have your head up your ass. So don’t be pissed at Nintendo because they make more money that you. Because one day Nintendo is going to blow your heads off with uber graphics and then you’ll have to develop for it. Then we’ll see whose still in the game.

Going backwards? What an ignorant thing to say. Why doesnt he just target Macs for his games from now on, theyre faster and better at running stuff. (I hate Macs)

Ill show him. Im going to pirate GoW And UT now and with the money i make im going to buy more Wii Games.

On April 21, 2008 at 8:57 am

“No, we go forward, not back.”

Haha, that was hilarious. I too own a Wii and barely play it, my brother prefers our second half-working 360 to it, although he does play Brawl sometimes. BTW, I seem to remember a game with big grunting future marines and chainsaws that did kinda well, and also happened not to have the hype of a sequel… he is being kinda hypocritical, though, because Epic’s released games on a platform that’s the worst in every way, the Mac.

What a loser the only reason that he dosn’t want to make a game for wii is because it takes time to make a good grafix game for the wii, but it can still handle the high quality that gears of war or other games of the sort would put into play. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a game that DOES NOT “collect dust” and is your looking for high quality imaging then see some of the cut sceenes from subspace emissary (especialy the one with Ganondwarf and Bowser entering the dark realm), I mean comon that is definatly a rival to all games they have created.

Everytime someone at EPIC opens their mouth lately, it’s usually an inflammatory comments about PC gaming or bashing some console. I’ve been seeing alot of this from THQ and Gas Powered Games recently.

The good news is, nobody seems to be paying any attention. Just look at all the big console titles that will be porting to the PC such as Mass Effect.

I’m pretty sure that GPG/THQ’s port of Supreme Commander will be an epic failure for the console. I just don’t see how the controller will function properly for an RTS.

Why don’t these companies put more energy into building up relations with the public instead of taring them down? Develop solid titles and people will buy them. Piracy will always be an issue, especially as the price of the titles continues to rise, but people are still going to buy games. If things were as bad in the industry as these companies would like us to believe then don’t you think they’d be looking to get out of the business? Smoke and mirrors people.

On April 21, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Okay, I believe what Capps said was pretty harsh and tactless, but not necessarily untrue. I am a Wii owner. Before its release, the Wii was the next-gen system I was most excited to get. But is there any games for the Wii that I play religiously? No. Why? Because the Wii’s library consists of a bunch of PS2 ports with (sometimes) crappy motion controls tacked on, casual games, and a smattering of actually good games made by Nintendo.

I don’t know about you, but PS2 ports are not what I’d call “next-gen”.

And next-gen games aren’t all graphics. They put processing power to the test with physics and other gameplay mechanics as well. Have any of you ever played “Dead Rising”? (Now before any of you call me a 360 fanboy, I’m not. I don’t even have an Xbox 360.) That game had a sprawling landscape and tons of enemies on screen at a time. I’d like to see someone put that on the Wii.

What had originally attracted me to the Wii was the potential of innovation it had. And that potential is still there, but nobody is taking advantage of it. Instead, Wii owners are being forced to play the same games they played last-gen, only now they have motion controls, if even.

Agreed… I sometimes think that finding a superNES or original NES on ebay wouldn’t be a bad option if I wanted to play those oldies…

On April 21, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Its like he is talking about my Wii owning friends as well. No one plays it any more. I really dont think we will be seeing much of the Wii in a few years and I’m certain it wont be the winner in this generation.

On April 21, 2008 at 9:48 pm

“I’m certain it wont be the winner in this generation.”

Hehe, it already is.

On April 22, 2008 at 8:02 am

Agreed the Wii has already won this generation’s console war. It would take a failure of epic proportions for it to lose the ground it has gained up to this point.

The only way Sony or Microsoft is winning this console war would be if one of them were able to buy out Nintendo. Which is never going to happen.

Go Marlins!!!!

On April 22, 2008 at 12:23 pm

@ ManOfTeal

How exactly has the Wii won this generations war when the PS3 will almost certainly be on sale for the next 7-8 years?

The winner will only be known when all 3 consoles are no longer on sale you

On April 22, 2008 at 8:09 pm

“How exactly has the Wii won this generations war when the PS3 will almost certainly be on sale for the next 7-8 years?”

What he mean is, and he’s right, that the PS3 will not surpass the Wii in global sales before the Wii2 is released. So yeah, maybe the PS3 will outsell the Wii (although I doubt it), but by the time it does, it won’t matter.
